Pekingese Information

Pekingese Description:

The origin of the Pekingese lies in the ancient city of Peking, China, now known as Beijing. Pekingese is regarded as one of the oldest breeds of dogs and was considered a sacred dog of the Chinese in the olden times. The breed was owned only by the royal class of China in the olden days. According to ancient tradition of the Chinese, a Pekingese was sacrificed when a Chinese emperor died as it was thought to protect the emperor in the afterlife. The modern Pekingese are the descendants of the litter owned by Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria got the Pekingese when the allied forces descended upon the Imperial Palace and rescued five puppies after everyone had fled the scene. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1906.

The Pekingese is a small sized dog with a compact, slight heavy frame. It has a rectangular shaped head with a heavy top skull; heart shaped ears which lie close to the head; large eyes which do not bulge, are round in shape and dark brown in color; a short and broad nose which is black in color with flared nostrils; a flat muzzle; taut, black lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. It has a long tail which is heavily feathered. The tail is set high and is carried over the back with a prominent curl. The Pekingese has short, stout legs with slightly turned out feet. This breed has a double coat with a long, straight outer coat which is slightly rough in texture and a dense and soft undercoat. Any color of the coat is acceptable for this breed.

The Pekingese is a brave, independent breed. It makes for a good companion breed if given the right training. The breed is good with kids as well as other dogs and pets. However, it can be slightly reserved strangers, and thus, makes for a good watchdog. However, it can be a little difficult to train. A firm and consistent approach is required when training this breed. The Pekingese is a moderately active breed. Thus, it adapts well to an indoor environment and hence, it is well suited to an apartment lifestyle.

Pekingese Care & Grooming:

The Pekingese is an average shedder. The long, double coat of the dog has a tendency to become matted, especially the hair on the hindlegs. Thus, daily brushing and combing of this breed is important. It should be bathed regularly using a dry shampoo to maintain a clean coat and must be dried properly after each bath. The eyes should be cleaned regularly to protect from infections. Hairs around eyes, ears and paws need to be trimmed properly. It is sensitive to very high temperature so care should be taken when taking them out.

The Pekingese is a moderately active breed. A daily walk is sufficient to take care of the behavioral and developmental needs of the breed. A run in an open but secure area occasionally also bodes well for the physical and mental development of the breed. Pekingese has a tendency to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed.

Pekingese Health Problems:

The Pekingese is prone to some health issues like dislocated kneecaps, herniated disks, eye ulcers , heart and breathing problem etc. It tends to catch cold easily so adequate care should be taken care of.
