Chinese Crested Information

Chinese Crested Description:

The exact origin of the Chinese Crested is unknown. It is believed to have originated in Africa, where it was known as the African Hairless Terrier. It was then brought by Chinese ships to Chinese mainland, where it was renamed as Chinese Crested. However, evidence suggests that the ancestry of this breed also lies in the Mexican Hairless breed. The modern Chinese Crested dogs owe their origin to the dogs of Debora Wood and that of dancer Gypsy Rose Lee. In the olden days, the breed was primarily used for hunting vermin. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1991.

The Chinese Crested is a small dog breed which is characterized by its bony frame. It has a relatively large head when compared to the size of the body; almond shaped eyes which are dark brown in color; large ears which are erect, triangular in shape and pointing slightly outwards; a bony muzzle which is elongated but not tapering; dark colored nose; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors or level bite. This breed has a medium sized, thin tail with a slight curve towards the end. It is carried to the side or straight down but never in line or above the line of the back. This breed has long legs which are slender and bony.

This breed comes in two varieties and both types generally come from the same litter. One is known as Hairless and other is Powderpuff. The Hairless has soft and silky hair only on the head, tail and feet, and the other part of the body has a soft and smooth skin. The entire body of the Powderpuff is covered with a soft and straight double coat. Its coat can be of any color.

The Chinese Crested is a toy dog, with a lovable demeanor. It is excellent with kids as well as other pets. However, rough handling of the dog by small children is not advised as it can get injured easily. It is easy to train. However, socializing is required at an early age. It does not bark much and given its small frame, it does not make for a good watchdog or a guard dog. However, it is an excellent companion dog, with the ability to perform tricks and keep the owner amused. It is loyal towards the owner. Given the small size of the breed, it is well suited to an apartment life. It needs lots of human attention.

Chinese Crested Care & Grooming:

The Chinese Crested is an odorless clean dog and may be a very good choice for allergy sufferers. It sheds very little hair. Powderpuff needs regular grooming. Brushing at least 3-4 times a week is required to maintain its double coat. The Hairless type needs frequent bathing, and some cream or oil need to be applied on its skin regularly. Since the coat of the Hairless is missing, rough handling of the dog is not advised. A good sunscreen lotion should be applied when taking the dog out in the sun to avoid any sunburn. Its nail needs be trimmed properly to avoid any injury. It is sensitive to cold so must be adequately protected in cold climate.

The Chinese Crested is an active breed which needs regular exercise. A long daily walk is required for emotional as well as physical well being of the dog. An occasional run in an open area is also recommended. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. This dog is allergic to wool and lanolin so should be kept away from such things.

Chinese Crested Health Problems:

The Chinese Crested is prone to some health issues like PRA, Skin allergies, Patellar luxation, Dental problem etc.
