Silky Terrier Information

Silky Terrier Description:

The origin of the Silky Terrier lies in Sydney, Australia. Earlier, it was named as the Sydney Silky after its place of origin, but was later renamed. Today, the breed is known as the Australian Silky Terrier in Australia and some other parts of the world while it is known as the Silky Terrier in North America. The breed is a result of crossbreeding between the Yorkshire Terrier and the Australian Terrier and dates back to the early part of the 19th century. This dog was primarily bred to be a companion dog and also used as a vermin hunter. This breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1959.

The Silky Terrier is a small dog breed, with a long, proportionate frame. It has a wedge shaped head which is slightly long to look at; small sized eyes which are almond shaped and dark in color; small sized ears which are high set, V-shaped and carried erect; a black nose; a deep, strong and square muzzle; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a docked tail which is proportionate to the body. The tail is set high and is carried erect at all times. It has short, strong legs with cat-like, well padded feet. It has a single coat which is long, straight, glossy and silky in texture. The color of the coat can be a combination of blue and tan.

The Silky Terrier is an intelligent and loving breed. It is good with kids as well as other pets. However, caution is advised with small pets such as rabbits, birds, rats etc. because of the breed’s hunting instincts. It is a curious breed which is eager to learn. Hence, it is very easy to train. Although it is small in size, it makes for a good watchdog too. This breed is known to be good traveler too and hence, it makes for a great companion breed. However, it requires a lot of exercise to release its pent up energy. Hence, this breed is not recommended for people who cannot afford enough time for the dog. If sufficiently exercised, it adapts well to an apartment life.

Silky Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Silky Terrier sheds very little hair. However, the long and silky coat of the dog is prone to tangles and mats. Almost daily brushing and regular trimming are required to keep its coat healthy. It should be bathed regularly and must be dried properly after each bath. Its ears and eyes should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. The hair around the ears, eyes and paws needs to be trimmed regularly.

It is an active breed with lots of energy. Daily walks are essential for releasing the pent up energy of the dog. These should be supplemented with jogging or running in an open area on a regular basis.

Silky Terrier Health Problems:

The Silky Terrier is prone to some health issues like Elbow dysplasia, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Patellar luxation etc.
