English Toy Spaniel Information

English Toy Spaniel Description:

The origin of the English Toy Spaniel, also known as the King Charles Spaniel, dates back to the 16th century. The ancestry of this breed is believed to be in Japan, sharing common blood with the Pekingese and Japanese Chin. A theory about the origin of this breed suggests that a toy spaniel was imported to England in the late 19th century when dogs were given as gifts. This toy spaniel was then crossbred with other dog breeds to create the modern English Toy Spaniel. In the olden days, this breed was favorite with the royal class. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1886.

The English Toy Spaniel is a small sized dog with a square frame. It has a large head; large eyes which are black or dark brown in color; low set ears which are feathered, lie close to the head and are long in appearance; a short, slightly square muzzle; large nose with flared nostrils and black in color; thick lips which a slightly pendulous lower lip and teeth which meet in an undershot. This breed has a docked tail in proportion to the size of the body. The tail is carried at the level of the back or slightly above it, with a slight curve towards the end. Like other spaniels, this breed too has short but strong legs with large, well padded feet. This breed has a long coat which is dense, glossy and, straight or slightly wavy. The color of the coat can be white with black and tan markings, black and tan, rich mahogany red, or red with white markings.

The English Toy Spaniel is a happy, laid-back breed. It is good with children as well as other dogs and pets. It can be slightly reserved with strangers, which makes it an average watchdog. It has a tendency to bark incessantly. Thus, firm training is required to bring out the best behavior. It is obedient breed which is easy to train, and hence, it is well suited to first time owners. It is a laid back breed which makes it well suited to an apartment life.

English Toy Spaniel Care & Grooming:

The King Charles Spaniel is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Its long and dense coat needs extensive grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 3-4 times a week and almost daily, during the shedding season. The coat should also be trimmed regularly to prevent matting of the hair. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly. Its low hanging ears tend to accumulate dirt so special care should be taken care of it.

The English Toy Spaniel is largely a companion breed. A daily long walk is sufficient for proper physical as well as mental development of the breed. The walks should be supplemented with a good run in an open but secured area every once in a while. It is sensitive to very high or very low temperature so should be adequately protected.

English Toy Spaniel Health Problems:

The English Toy Spanielis prone to some health issues like Heart disease, Respiratory problem, Ear and eye problems etc.
