The exact origin of the Pomeranian is unknown. However, the breed gets its name from the region of Pomerania where the breed gained in popularity. The region of Pomerania is the present day northern parts of Germany and Poland. The breed was derived from the Spitz variety and was originally used as a farm dog. However, during the reign of Queen Victoria, the breed was purposely bred small in size which resulted in present day Pomeranian over a period of time. The breed gained immense popularity during the reign of Queen Victoria as it was sported by most members of the royal family. The popularity of the breed continues to this day. It was first recognized by the AKC in 1888.

The Pom is a toy breed with a compact frame. It has a wedge shaped head; medium sized eyes which are almond shaped and dark in color; small sized eras which are set high and carried erect; a black nose with flared nostrils; a short muzzle which is deep and strong in appearance; taut lips which are black in color with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a high set tail which is heavily plumed. The tail is carried over the back. It has short, straight legs which are heavy boned with round, cat like feet. This breed has a double coat with long and straight outercoat which is hard in texture and, a soft and dense undercoat. The color of the coat can be any color or also a combination of any color like orange and red, black and white, or black and tan etc.

The Pomeranian is an active, inquisitive breed. It can do well with kids if socialized at an early age. However, firm sense of leadership is required from every member of the family. It does well with other dogs as well as pets. It can be slightly reserved with strangers and has a tendency to bark, which makes it a very good watchdog. It has a docile nature and can learn tricks easily, which makes it a very good companion breed. This breed is easy to train too, although it can be susceptible to the Small Dog Syndrome. The Pomeranian loves the indoors and hence, it is well suited to an apartment life.

The Pom is a heavy shedder. The long double coat of the breed needs extensive grooming. Its coat should be brushed at least 3-4 times a week with a firm bristle brush. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. It is prone to infections of the ear and eye. Thus, eyes and ears should be cleaned regularly and hair around these areas and nail should be trimmed regularly. To keep the teeth of the dog in good condition, crunchy food is recommended.

The Pomeranian is an active breed which needs some amount of daily exercise. A daily walk is sufficient for emotional and developmental needs of the dog. However, these should be supplemented with a romp in an open area for best results. It is sensitive to hot weather so should be adequately protected. This dog tends to gain weight easily so should not be overfed.
