Miniature Pinscher Information

Miniature Pinscher Description:

The Miniature Pinscher is a small dog breed which is said to have originated in Germany and developed from the breeds like German Pinscher, Italian Greyhound and Dachshund. Although resembling the Doberman Pinscher, this breed is believed to precede the Doberman breed by at least two centuries. However the exact origin of this breed is unknown. This dog was primarily used as a very efficient barnyard ratter. Miniature Pinscher popularly known as the "King of the Toys" was first recognized by the AKC in 1925.

This dog breed has a compact, well proportioned body, with a proportionate head; bright and oval eyes; high set ears which are erect from the base to tip and may be cropped or uncropped; a well defined muzzle; black nose with taut lips and teeth which meet in scissors bite. It has a short tail which is set high and proportionate to the size of the body of the dog. The forelegs are strong and straight while the hindlegs of this breed are muscular, angulated and well balanced. Its coat is short, straight, smooth and glossy and the color of the coat can be red, stag red (red with black hairs), chocolate with tan or black with rust.

This is a courageous dog which takes pride in its belonging. Although a very obedient breed, it should be trained properly from an early age. If pampered more than necessary, these dogs can become arrogant, headstrong and aggressive which can lead to problems. They are as comfortable indoors as they are outdoors. However, too much indoor behavior should not be encouraged as it can lead to behavioral problems. If trained the right way, this breed can make for an excellent watchdog given its agile behavior and obedient nature. This dog breed loves to learn and is loyal to its master. Given the right leadership, it is great with kids as well as strangers and other pets. This breed has a tendency to run to far distances and therefore, proper vigilance is needed to keep them within their boundaries. This dog does well in apartment life and not recommended for first time dog owner.

Miniature Pinscher Care & Grooming:

The Miniature Pinscher is an average shedder. Its short and smooth coat does not require much grooming. Brushing once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush is sufficient to maintain its coat. It should be bathed only when necessary using a mild shampoo. Its ears and eyes should be cleaned regularly and nail should be trimmed properly to avoid any injury. This dog is sensitive to cold weather so care should be taken when taking them out.

Like every other active breed, this one too needs its share of exercise. A daily walk is necessary to avoid behavioral problems while a run in a fenced yard takes care of its developmental needs. However, the fence should be high enough to stop it from escaping. This breed is very curious by nature and loves to explore new territories, which makes them eager to escape. It has a tendency to chew small objects and choke on them so such things should be kept away from their reach.

Miniature Pinscher Health Problems:

The Miniature Pinscher is a healthy and long living breed without any major health issues.
