Havanese Information

Havanese Description:

The origin of the Havanese lies in Cuba. The breed has descended from Bichon type of dogs, more specifically the Havanese Silk Dog, which is now extinct. It was in the 17th century that a breed known as the Bichon Havanese was brought from the Tenerife to Cuba and grew in popularity in the noble class. However, by the 18th and the 19th century, the German and French poodles grew in popularity and subsequently, the Bichon Havanese was crossbred with the poodle to give rise to present day Havanese. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1996.

The Havanese is a small dog breed with a compact, long frame. It has a proportionate head; large eyes which are almond shaped and dark brown in color; long ears which are set high and are broad at the base; a black of brown nose; a rectangular muzzle which is deep and strong; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a medium sized tail which is heavily plumed. The tail is set high and is carried over the back and may drift to either side of the body. It has a double coat with a soft, dense and wavy outercoat and, a slightly shorter and dense undercoat. The undercoat as well as outercoat is silky in texture. Its coat can be of any color or also combination of any colors.

The Havanese is a lively and obedient breed. It is a quick leaner and loves to learn new things. That makes it very easy to train. However, it is a sensitive breed which does not respond very well to harsh training methods. It is good with kids, dogs as well as other pets. It has a tendency to bark on sensing danger, which makes it a good watchdog. However, it is friendly with strangers if socialized well at an early age. Being an excellent companion breed, it is well suited to an apartment life.

Havanese Care & Grooming:

The Havanese sheds very little hair and is good for allergy sufferers. Its long wavy coat needs extensive grooming. Almost daily brushing is required to maintain a healthy looking coat. The hair on the head should either be trimmed or tied up in a knot to keep them away from the eyes. Its long coat tends to accumulate dust, so need to be bathed regularly but must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes, ears and teeth should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. The hair around its eyes, ears and paws, and nails should be trimmed regularly. Some dry food or bone should be given to the dog to chew, in order to keep its teeth strong and clean.

Being a toy breed, it needs moderate amount of exercise. A daily walk is essential for emotional needs of the dog. A romp in an open area every now and then or play is sufficient to take care of its developmental needs. Lack of exercise may create behavioral problem in the dog and can also make it overweight.

Havanese Health Problems:

The Havanese is a long living healthy breed with some health issues like Cataract, Patellar Luxation, PRA, Liver and heart diseases etc.
