Lowchen Information

Lowchen Description:

The exact origin of the Lowchen is still unknown. However, according to a popular theory, this breed is of the lineage of Bichon Frise. Historical evidence suggests that the breed was popular in Italy, Germany and other parts of Europe form the 16th to the 18th century. The breed is believed to have originated in Germany, given its German name which means “little lion” The breed gets its name from its lion like trimmed coat. After the Second World War, the numbers of this breed started decreaing which prompted the inclusion of this breed in one of the rarest dog breeds in the world. The breed was first recognized by AKC in 1996.

The Lowchen is a small sized dog with a proud gait and a proportionate body. It has a relatively small head with a lively expression; deep set eyes which are dark brown in color; high-set ears which are moderate in length; a broad muzzle with a rounded finish to it; a heavily pigmented nose; taut lips which are of the same color as the nose; and teeth which are large, well spaced out and meet in a scissors bite. The tail of this breed is high-set with a prominent curve. It is trimmed synonymous to the tail of the lion with the feathers at the end of the tail resting on the back. It has small, straight legs with hindlegs slightly wider apart than the forelegs. The coat of this breed is soft and slightly wavy with varying density in different areas of the body. The color of the coat can be of any colors but most common colors are white, black and lemon.

This small breed is lively and cheerful, and highly protective too, which is contrary to their appearance. They are excellent with kids as well as other pets. However, they may pose a problem with other dogs if not trained properly. They are quick learners and hence, they are very easy to train. The Lowchen dogs are very intelligent and can make for a good watchdog. Although they lack the attacking instinct, they possess a protective instinct and can alarm the owner of possible threats through barking. They can be hyperactive at times. They are basically a companion breed and do well indoors as well as outdoors. Hence, they are well suited to apartment life.

Lowchen Care & Grooming:

The Lowchen sheds very little hair. Regular brushing with a firm bristle brush is required to avoid any tangles and matt. It should be bathed only when required using a mild shampoo. Coat of the pet dog is generally clipped for an easy maintenance. The ears, eyes and teeth of the dog should be cleaned regularly and the claws should be trimmed properly. Hair around the ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly.

They are largely companion dogs and hence, do not need vigorous exercise. However, a daily walk is recommended for healthy physical as well as mental development of the breed.

Lion Clip: Lion clip is most popular for the Lowchen. The coat is clipped from hindquarters to hock joints, front legs, upper half of the tail and feet.

Lowchen Health Problems:

The Lowchen is not known to have any hereditary disorders. However, it may be susceptible to patellar luxation, which is a disease of the knee.
