Bulldog Information

Bulldog Description:

Bulldog also known as the English Bulldog is a native of British Isles, and believed to be descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff during 13th century. This dog may have derived its name from its use in bull baiting. Animal baiting became illegal in England in 1835, and then these working bulldogs were crossed with pugs to produce a nonaggressive, gentle and affectionate family pet known as English Bulldog. The first Bulldog registered by the AKC was in 1934. Now this dog has become one of the most popular breed in the world.

Bulldog is a medium sized, compact dog with well proportioned head; huge extra skin on skulls and forehead; muzzle is very short and broad; neck is short and thick; nose is large, broad and black; square shaped jaws are broad and massive; eyes are very dark; the rose ears are small, thin and set high; forelegs are short, straight, muscular and set wide apart; hind legs are strong, muscular and longer than the forelegs; tail is either straight or turned down. It has short and smooth coat which is straight, fine and glossy. The color of its coat can be red brindle, all other brindles, solid white, solid red and fawn or fallow.

Bulldog is a loyal, gentle and adorable dog. This dog is very loyal to his family and forms a strong bond with the children. With proper training it mingles well with other pets also. It is a good guard dog, but may not be a good watch dog due to its gentleness. Bulldog needs lots of human attention. This breed is easy to train but a firm approach is required when handling this breed, otherwise it can become unnecessarily dominant. This dog adapts very well to an indoor environment, so is a good choice for apartment life.

Bulldog Care & Grooming:

The Bulldog is an average shedder. Its short and smooth coat is easy to maintain. Brushing its coat once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush and almost daily brushing during shedding season, and also rubbing its body with a damp towel once in a week are sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. Special care should be taken to clean its fold and wrinkles regularly. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. Its nail also need to be trimmed regularly to avoid any injury.

Bulldog prefers not to exercise, and prone to drool and snore. This is not a very active dog so daily walk is sufficient to keep it healthy both physically and mentally. It is sensitive to very high or very low temperature so should be adequately protected. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal.

Bulldog Health Problems:

The Bulldog is prone to some health issues like Breathing problem, Skin infections, Poor eyesight, Knee problem, hip Dysplasia etc.
