Tibetan Spaniel Information

Tibetan Spaniel Description:

The origin of the Tibetan Spaniel, as the name suggests, lies in Tibet. It is one of the oldest breeds of the dog, historical remains of similar dogs dating back to more than 2000 years ago. They were also called as the lion dogs in ancient times because of their resemblance to guarding lions of China. It is believed that the dog was gifted to Chinese palaces and other Buddhist nations where it was crossbred with different Chinese breeds such as the Pekingese. It was primarily used as watchdog in monasteries. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1983.

The Tibetan Spaniel is a small sized dog with a long frame. It has a small head which is proportionate to the body; oval shaped eyes which are medium in size and dark brown in color; high set feathery ears are medium sized and pendant in shape; a short, square, strong muzzle; a black nose; tight lips with teeth which meet in a slightly undershot bite. This breed has a proportionate tail which is heavily feathered. The tail is high set and is carried is a prominent curl over the back. It has small legs with well padded feet. This breed has a double coat with a medium length outer coat which is flat and silky, and a smooth and dense undercoat. The color of the coat can be of any color or also combination of any color.

The Tibetan Spaniel is a happy and a charming breed. It is good with children, dogs as well as other pets. However, if allowed to have its way, it can be stubborn and dominant towards other dogs as well as pets. It has great eyesight and a tendency to bark at odd noises as well as strangers, which makes it a very good watchdog. It can be slightly difficult to train. Patience and a firm approach is required when training this breed. It adapts well to an indoor environment so is well suited to an apartment life.

Tibetan Spaniel Care & Grooming:

The Tibbie is an average shedder. Its flat and silky coat is easy to maintain. The coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week and almost daily during shedding season. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. The ears and eyes should be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around the eyes, ears and paws need to be trimmed regularly. Its feathery ears tend to accumulate dirt and moisture so special care needs to be taken of the ears.

It is generally a very laid back breed and thus, requires moderate amount of exercise. A daily long walk is sufficient for physical and emotional well being of the dog. Jogging or running in an open area once in a while is sufficient to take care of its other needs. This breed is sensitive to warm climate so should be adequately protected. Excessive exercising in hot climate should be avoided as it is vulnerable to heat stroke.

Tibetan Spaniel Health Problems:

The Tibetan Spaniel is prone to some health issues like PRA, Portosystemic shunt, Respiratory diseases, Heat stroke etc.
