French Bulldog Information

French Bulldog Description:

The origin of the French Bulldog lies in England. It was during the early part of the 19th century that a miniature version of the Bulldog began to be bred by traders in England. During the time of Industrial Revolution, lace workers in England lost their job and hence, began setting in France. While travelling to France, they brought various breeds of dogs with them. This included the miniature Bulldogs. Slowly, the popularity of the breed grew so much in France that the breed was eventually given the name French Bulldog. The breed shares its ancestry with the ancient Molossian breed bred by the Greeks. The French Bulldog was first recognized by the AKC in 1898.

The French Bulldog is a small dog breed with a muscular, compact frame. It has a large head which is square in appearance; medium sized eyes which are round in shape and dark colored; bat ears which are elongated, set high and carried erect with a slightly rounded tip; black nose; a deep muzzle with is strong and broad; slightly pendulous lips which are black in color with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a small tail which low set. The tail is carried low when relaxed. It has medium sized legs which are strong and muscular with medium sized feet. It has a short, smooth and fine coat. The color of the coat can be white, brindle, fawn or a mixture of brindle and white.

The French Bulldog is an easy going and slightly comical breed. It is good with children, although it does not tolerate too much rough play. It is good with dogs as well as other pets. However, it has a tendency to chase mice ferociously. It is friendly with strangers and hence, does not make for a good watchdog or a guard dog. It is largely a companion breed which will keep people amused. It is an easy to train breed. However, it is prone to Small Dog Syndrome. Hence, a calm and consistent leadership is required when training this breed. The French Bulldog loves to stay indoors and hence, is well suited to an apartment life.

French Bulldog Care & Grooming:

The Frenchie is an average shedder. The short and fine coat of the breed needs to be brushed once or twice a week to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary or can also be rubbed occasionally with a damp towel. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly and nail needs to be trimmed regularly to avoid any injury.

It is a fairly active breed. A daily walk is sufficient to take care of the dog’s emotional and developmental needs. Supplementing it with a romp is an open area is good for the overall health of the breed. It is sensitive to very high or very low temperature so should be adequately protected. This dog has a tendency to gain weight quickly so overfeeding should be avoided.

French Bulldog Health Problems:

The French Bulldog is prone to some health issues like Heart diseases, Eye problems, Spinal disorders, Respiratory diseases, Obesity etc. More than 80% Frenchie pups are delivered by C Section due to their large heads. Because of its snub nose it gets difficulty to breathe in extreme temperatures and also tends to wheeze and snore. Due to acute respiratory problem French Bulldogs are banned by some airlines.
