Glen Of Imaal Terrier Information

Glen Of Imaal Terrier Description:

The Glen of Imaal Terrier derives its name from its place of origin, that is, the Glen of Imaal which lies in the county of Wicklow in Ireland. The origin of this breed can be traced back to the time of Elizabeth I. During the time of civil war in Ireland, Frenchmen were called by the queen to bring the situation under control. After the end of the civil war, the Frenchmen brought with them their hounds which were then bred with the local Irish terriers and hence, the Glen of Imaal Terrier was born. It was primarily used for hunting fox, otters and badgers. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 2004.

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a small to medium sized dog with an elongated body. It has a large head which is in proportion to the rest of the body; round eyes of medium size which are brown in color; small ears which are half pricked in shape; a strong muzzle which tapers slightly towards the end; a black nose; black lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite or a level bite. This breed has a docked tail which is carried above the line of back and carried proudly. It has bowed legs with strong feet. This breed has a double coat with a rough and medium in length outer coat, and a soft and dense undercoat. The color of its coat can be various shades of wheaten, blue or brindle.

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is an agile and a patient breed. It can work relentlessly while hunting. With proper training this dog can does well with kids as well as other dogs. Caution is advised with smaller pets such as rats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts. It is an obedient breed and hence easy to train. It is sensitive to harsh discipline so a calm approach should be adopted when training this breed. It has a tendency to dig and chase like other hunting breeds and thus, should not be let off the leash when out in the open. It is a quiet breed which seldom barks. Thus, it is well suited to city life. It is slightly reserved with strangers, which makes it a good watchdog. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is comfortable indoor as well as outdoor and is thus suited to an apartment life. Although primarily a hunting dog, it is a good companion dog too.

Glen Of Imaal Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Glen of Imaal Terrier sheds very little hair. Its harsh coat is easy to maintain. The coat needs to be brushed at least 2-3 times a week, and should be stripped in every 4 to 5 months. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its nail and the hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed properly. Its beard should be cleaned properly after each meal to remove any food remains.

It is an active breed which needs moderate amount of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. The walks should be supplemented with a romp in an open area every now and then. However, it should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area because of its innate hunting instincts.
