Wire Fox Terrier Information

Wire Fox Terrier Description:

The origin of the Wire Fox Terrier lies in England. The breed dates back to the 17th century. It is believed to be result of crossbreeding between the Dachshunds, English Hound, Fox Hound and Beagle. The dog gets its name from its wirehaired coat and its excellent ability to hunt foxes. In fact, it was primarily bred for hunting foxes and other small animals. Although historical evidence suggests that the breed was owned by the royal family of England at one point of time, it was never popular as a family dog until the mid 20th century. The dog was first recognized by the AKC in 1885.

The Wire Fox Terrier is a small sized dog with square frame. It has a long head; deep set eyes which are small in size and dark in color; v-shaped ears which are small in size and lie close to the cheek; a black nose; a strong, square muzzle which gives an impression of tapering towards the end; taut lips with teeth which meet in level bite. This breed has a docked tail which is proportion to the size of the body. The tail is high set and carried erect, with no curl, but a slight forward bend. Like all terrier breeds, this breed too has medium sized legs which are square shaped with well padded feet. The hindlegs are strongly inclined while the forelegs are straight. It has a broken, dense and wiry coat which is rough to touch. The color of its coat is always white with black or tan markings.

The Wire Fox Terrier is a high energy, affectionate breed. It is good with children and does not mind rough play. It is good with other dogs as well. However, caution is advised with non canine pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds etc. because of the dog’s innate hunting instincts. It is an easy to train breed. However, variety is required in the training program since it gets easily bored of repetition. Thus, this breed is not advised for beginners or families who cannot afford to give enough time to the dog. It makes for a good companion dog but is not a great watchdog or a guarddog. It adapts well to an indoor as well as outdoor environment and hence, it is well suited to an apartment life.

Wire Fox Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Wire Fox Terrier sheds very little hair and good for allergy sufferers. Its dense and wiry coat needs extensive grooming. The coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week, and should be clipped in every 3 to 4 months. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed properly. The hair around its mouth should be cleaned properly after each meal.

It is an active breed which needs daily long walks to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Apart from physical exercise, it also needs a lot of mental exercise in the form of games, which should be made a part of the daily routine. It should not be let off the leash when out in the open as it has a tendency to chase things.

Wire Fox Terrier Health Problems:

The Wire Fox Terrier is prone to some health issues like Cataract, Skin allergies, Epilepsy, Shoulder dislocations etc.
