Norwich Terrier Information

Norwich Terrier Description:

The origin of the Norwich Terrier lies in East Anglia, England. The breed dates to the 19th century. In the olden days, the Norwich Terrier and the Norfolk Terrier were regarded as the same breed, differentiated only by the shape of their ear. The two breeds were regarded as distinct in 1964. The exact origin of the breed is unknown. However, it is thought to be a result of crossbreeding between Irish Terrier and the now extinct Trumpington Terrier. The Norwich Terrier was called the Jones Terrier and the Cantab Terrier before being rechristened to its current name. It was primarily used for hunting rats, foxes and badgers. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1936.

The Norwich Terrier is a small sized dog with stocky, long frame. It has a large, fox like head; oval shaped eyes which are small and dark colored; medium sized ears which are prick shaped and carried erect; a black nose; a strong muzzle which is wedge shaped; taut, black lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a medium length tail after it is docked. The tail is set high and carried erect. It has small sized but strong legs with small feet. This breed has a medium length straight coat which is wiry and coarse in texture. The color of the coat can be red, wheaten, grizzle, or black and tan.

The Norwich Terrier is an affectionate, active breed. It is good with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised with smaller, non canine pets such as rats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. because of the dog’s natural hunting instincts. The dog is friendly with strangers, which does not make it a very good watchdog. It is very easy to train and is eager to follow rules. It is susceptible to Small Dog Syndrome, which can lead to behavioral issues. This breed adapts well to indoor as well as outdoor environment and hence, it is well suited to an apartment life.

Norwich Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Norwich Terrier sheds little hair. Its coarse and wiry coat needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week, and should be clipped in every 4 to 5 months. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed properly. The hair around its mouth should be cleaned properly after each meal.

It is an active breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily long walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. The walks should be supplemented with a romp in an open area every now and then. This breed loves the game of catch and retrieve. However, it should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area because of its innate hunting instincts.

Norwich Terrier Health Problems:

The Norwich Terrier is generally a healthy breed with some health issues like Cataract, Epilepsy, Luxating patella, hip Dysplasia etc.
