Sealyham Terrier Information

Sealyham Terrier Description:

The origin of the Sealyham Terrier lies in Wales. The breed derives its name from Sealyham in Wales which was the estate of John Edwardes. John Edwardes is credited with creating the breed. The breed is a result of cross breeding between the Fox Terrier, Dandie Dinmont, Corgi and West Highland White Terrier. It was primarily used for hunting small game like otter and badger. It was once a popular breed with Hollywood celebrities with well known personalities like Alfred Hitchcock owning this breed. However, the popularity of this dog waned with the ban on hunting in countries around the world. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1911.

The Sealyham Terrier is a small sized dog but extremely agile and powerful. It has a long head in proportion to the rest of the body; a black nose with flared nostrils; deep set eyes which are dark in color; medium set ears which are folded at the ends and lie close to the cheeks; thin lips which are taut and black in color with teeth which meet in scissors bite; a moderate muzzle with a somewhat square appearance. The tail of this breed is docked and is always carried erect above the line of the back. This breed has short but strong legs with large feet. This breed has a double coat with a long, hard and wiry outer coat, and a soft and dense weather resistant undercoat. The color of its coat is white with or without markings of lemon, tan or badger.

The Sealyham Terrier is a loyal and a loving breed. With proper training it goes well with kids as well as other dogs. Caution is advised with smaller pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts. It is an agile breed which is slightly reserved with strangers and thus, it makes for a good watchdog. However, it can be difficult to train. Patience and perseverance is required to train this breed. A young puppy is very active and as the dog matures, it develops calm and a laidback temperament. It is well suited to an apartment life as it is comfortable in a closed space.

Sealyham Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Sealyham Terrier sheds little hair. Its hard and wiry coat needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 3-4 times a week to maintain a healthy looking coat. The coat should also be trimmed regularly to prevent matting of the hair. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly. Its beard should be cleaned daily to remove any food remains.

This dog requires moderate amount of daily exercise. Daily long walk is sufficient to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. The walks should be supplemented with a romp in an open area every now and then. However, it should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area because of its innate hunting instincts. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed.

Sealyham Terrier Health Problems:

The Sealyham Terrier is prone to some health issues like hip and elbow Dysplasia, Cataract etc.
