Staffordshire Bull Terrier Information

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Description:

The origin of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier lies in Staffordshire, England. The breed dates back to the 19th century, when it was developed by crossbreeding bulldogs and several terrier breeds such as the Bull Terrier, the Manchester Terrier and other native terrier breeds. In the olden days, it was used in bull-fighting events. After bull fighting became illegal in England, it began to be used in dog fighting events to test the gameness of the breed. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1975.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a medium sized dog with a muscular frame. It has a short head which is heavy and deep in appearance; medium sized eyes which are round in shape and dark in color; medium sized ears which are rose or half pricked; black nose with flared nostrils; a square, strong and deep muzzle; taut lips which are black in color with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a medium sized tail which is set low, strong at the base and tapers towards the end. The tail is carried downwards without any curl. It has proportionate legs which are straight and strong with medium sized, well padded feet. It has a short and thick coat which is smooth in texture. The color of the coat can be red, fawn, white, black or blue with white markings; or any shade of brindle with or without white markings.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an intelligent, affectionate breed. It is excellent with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised with smaller pets such as guinea pigs because of the dog’s hunting instincts. It is friendly with strangers, which does not make it a very good watchdog or guard dog. However, it is a very obedient breed which makes it very easy to train. But it is a high energy breed which loves to do new things. Thus, a firm approach is required to teach the dog what it can and what it cannot do. It has a tendency to chew on things when young. Thus, strong toys should be given to the breed to satisfy its desire to chew. This breed is not recommended for beginners because it requires strong leadership skills and a clear set of rules to follow. However, it does adapt well to an indoor environment if sufficiently exercise and hence, it is suited to an apartment life.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an average shedder. Its short and smooth coat needs minimal grooming. Brushing its coat 2-3 times in a week and rubbing its body occasionally with a damp towel is sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. Its ears and eyes need to be cleaned regularly. It is prone to gastric problems so large meals should be avoided.

It is a high energy breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily Long walks are essential for physical and emotional well being of the dog. These should be supplemented with jogging or running in a secure fenced area.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Health Problems:

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is prone to some health issues like Cataract and other eye problems, Tumors, Gastric disorders, hip Dysplasia etc.
