Dandie Dinmont Terrier Information

Dandie Dinmont Terrier Description:

The origin of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier lies in the border area between Scotland and England. The latest known records of this breed date back to the 18th century. Although the exact origin of this breed is unknown, it is believed to have descended from Skye Terrier and Scotch Terrier. The breed derives its name from a Waletr Scott novel where the breed was owned by a character named “Dandie Dinmont”. The breed was primarily used to hunt otters and vermin. Although the numbers of this breed dwindled after the Second World War, it was resurrected through dedicated breeding programs. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1886.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a small sized dog with a long and curved frame. It has a large head proportionate to the body with an intelligent expression; large round eyes which are dark hazel in color; low-set ears which are broad towards the end and almost point like where they join the head; a deep muzzle which is almost square shaped; black nose; black or dark colored lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. It has a strong tail proportionate to the length of the body. The tail is broad to start with and tapers off towards the end. It is carried at the level of or slightly above the level of the body. The legs are short but strong, with the hind legs slightly longer than the forelegs. The coat of this breed is a mixture of around 2/3 hard hair and around 1/3 soft hair, with the length of the hair being about 2 inches. Its head is covered with soft and silky hair. The color of its coat can be mustard or pepper.

This breed is trustworthy and a very good companion dog. With proper training it goes well with kids as well as other dogs. Caution is advised with smaller pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts. It is easy to train if a firm hand is dealt. The strong agility of the breed makes it a good watchdog. It is comfortable indoor as well as outdoor and thus is suitable for an apartment life.

Dandie Dinmont Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier sheds very little hair. Its hard and soft coat needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week and should also be stripped twice in a year to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. The eyes and ears of the dog should be cleaned properly. Its nail and the hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed properly. Its beard should be cleaned daily to remove any food remains.

This dog requires moderate amount of daily exercise. Daily long walk is sufficient to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. The walks should be supplemented with a romp in an open area every now and then. However, it should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area because of its innate hunting instincts. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed.

Dandie Dinmont Terrier Health Problems:

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is prone to some health issues like Epilepsy, Glaucoma, Hypothyroidism, Slip discs etc.
