Scottish Terrier Information

Scottish Terrier Description:

As the name of the breed suggests, the Scottish Terrier originated in the Highlands of Scotland during 1700s. It is one of the oldest breeds of terrier, the origin of which is slightly obscure. In the olden days, the breed was primarily used to hunt vermin and badger. In the 1870s, the breed was also known as the Aberdeen Terrier after a town named Aberdeen in Scotland. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1885.

The Scottie is a small breed of dog with a sturdy and well balanced breed. It has a long head; a longish muzzle, but is not tapering; a black nose; small, almond shaped eyes which are dark brown or black in color; high set ears which are small in size and pointed towards the end; thin, dark lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite or a level bite. This breed has a medium sized tail which is strong at the base and tapering to a point. It is carried erect with a slight bend towards the end, but is never carried over the back. The breed, like other terriers, has small but strong legs. The Scottish Terrier has a double coat, with a hard, dense, wiry and water resistant outer coat and a soft and dense undercoat. The hair on its beard, eyebrows, legs and lower body are bushy and longer than the other parts of the body. The color of the coat can be black, brindle or wheaten with little white on the chest and chin.

The Scottish Terrier is a sporty breed which loves to play and have fun. It is excellent with adult kids. However, this breed is not advised for families with young kids as it can get rough with them. It is an obedient breed and a people pleaser. However, it can be a little hard to train. A firm and consistent approach is needed when training this breed. It is a sensitive breed, and therefore, harsh training methods are advised against. It is an excellent watchdog as well as a companion dog. It is good with other dogs. However, caution is advised with other pets such as cats and other small animals as it has a natural tendency to hunt smaller animals. Socialization at an early age is required to bring out the best behavior. It prefers cool surroundings and is well suited to an apartment lifestyle. This breed may not be recommended for first time dog owners.

Scottish Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Scottie sheds very little hair. However, its coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week, and should be clipped in every 5 to 6 months. It should be bathed only when necessary using a dry shampoo and needs to be dried properly after each bath. Its beard should be washed daily to remove any food remains. Hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed regularly.

It is an active breed which requires regular exercise. Daily long walks coupled with a lot of play are recommended for optimum physical and mental well being of the breed.

Scottish Terrier Health Problems:

The Scottish Terrier prone to some health issues like Scottie Cramp, Cancer, von Willebrand’s Disease, skin and eye allergies etc.
