Smooth Fox Terrier Information

Smooth Fox Terrier Description:

The origin of the Smooth Fox Terrier lies in England. It is one of the oldest known terrier breeds, dating back to the 17th century. This breed is a result of crossbreeding between the English Hound, the Fox Hound, the Beagle and the Dachshunds. It was primarily used as a farm dog for protecting livestock from vermin, foxes and badgers. It was earlier categorized under the same name as the Wire Fox Terrier, but was given a separate status in 1984. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1885.

The Smooth Fox Terrier is a medium sized dog with an athletic and proportionate frame characteristic of the terriers. It has a long but proportionate head; V-shaped ears which are small in size and lie close to the cheek; deep set eyes which are medium in size and dark colored; a black nose; a well pronounced, square muzzle; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite or a level bite. This breed has a high set tail which is usually docked. The tail is carried erect with a slight forward bend. However, it does not have a prominent curl. It has medium length legs with small feet. The coat of this breed is short, smooth, straight, hard and dense. The color of the coat can be white with black or tan markings.

The Smooth Fox Terrier is a playful and a high energy breed. It is great with kids and does well with other dogs. However, caution is advised with non canine pets such as rabbit, rat, guinea pig, bird etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts. It makes for a good watchdog. It is easy to train but constant innovation is required when training this breed since it has a short attention span and can get easily bored. Thus, this breed is not advised for beginners or families who cannot afford to give enough time to the dog. Given the playfulness and the affection of the breed, it makes for a great companion breed. It adapts well to an indoor as well as outdoor so is well suited to an apartment life.

Smooth Fox Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Smooth Fox Terrier is an average shedder. Its short and smooth coat is easy to maintain. Brushing its coat 2-3 times a week with a firm bristle brush and rubbing its body once in a week with a damp towel are enough to keep its coat healthy and beautiful. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed properly.

It is a high energy breed which requires lot of exercise. Daily long walks are vital to for physical as well as emotional well being of the dog. These should be supplemented with occasional running or jogging in an open but secured area. It should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area since it has a tendency to chase small game.

Smooth Fox Terrier Health Problems:

The Smooth Fox Terrier is prone to some health issues like Deafness, Cataract, Distichiasis, Lens luxation, Luxating patella etc.
