Skye Terrier Information

Skye Terrier Description:

The Skye Terrier derives its name from the Isle of Skye in Scotland, which is its place of origin. Although the exact origin of the breed is unknown, there are two popular theories associated with the breed. According to one theory, the local terriers of the region were mated with Maltese that arrived with the ship wreck in the Isle of Skye, hence resulting in the Skye Terrier. Another theory states that the Skye Terrier were present much before the Maltese dogs arrived and is a result of crossbreeding between Celtic Terriers and Swedish Valhund. This dog was primarily used for hunting fox and vermin and for guarding livestock. The popularity of this breed grew in the 19th century when Queen Victoria developed a liking to this breed. The most famous of all Skye Terriers in the history of the breed is Greyferiar’s Bobby. This Skye Terrier is said to have guarded his master’s, John Grey’s grave. A statue was made in the dog’s honor after it dies at the age of 16. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1887.

The Skye Terrier is a medium sized dog with a long and low body. It has a proportionate head; medium sized eyes which are dark brown in color; medium sized, feathered ears which may be pricked or dropping close to the cheeks; a short muzzle; a black nose with wide nostrils; taut lips with teeth meeting in scissors bite or a level bite. This breed has a long pendulous tail which is never carried above the line of the back. However, occasionally, when excited, the tail may be carried high. The legs of this breed are short and muscular with hare like feet. It has a double coat with a long, straight, flat and harsh outer coat, and a short, soft and woolly undercoat. The color of its coat can be black, blue, grey, cream or fawn, with varying shades of the same color in different areas of the body.

The Skye Terrier is a docile dog. With proper training it goes well with kids as well as other dogs. Caution is advised with smaller pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts. It is very easy to train and responds well to obedience training. It is friendly with strangers, although socializing at an early age may be required to bring out their best behavior. It is comfortable indoor as well as outdoor and thus is suitable for an apartment life.

Skye Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Skye Terrier is an average shedder. Its long and flat coat needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 3-4 times a week to maintain a healthy looking coat. The coat should also be trimmed regularly to prevent matting of the hair. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly. Its beard should be cleaned daily to remove any food remains.

This dog requires moderate amount of daily exercise. Daily long walk is sufficient to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. The walks should be supplemented with a romp in an open area every now and then. However, it should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area because of its innate hunting instincts. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed.

Skye Terrier Health Problems:

The Skye Terrier is prone to some health issues like Degenerative disc disease, Cancer, Hypothyroidism etc.
