Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Information

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Description:

The origin of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier lies in Ireland. It is one of the oldest Irish dog breeds, the lineage of which lies in Irish Terrier and Kerry Blue. In the olden days, it was used as a multi-purpose dog, assisting in guarding livestock, working as a watchdog and also working as a vermin hunter. Despite its long history, the breed grew in popularity only in the 20th century. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1973.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a medium sized dog with a square built. It has a rectangular, proportionate head; almond shaped eyes which are brown in color; medium sized ears which lie close to the head and point slightly forward; a square, well filled muzzle; large nose which is black in color; taut lips which are black in color with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a high set tail which is docked in most cases. The tail is carried perpendicular to the back with a slight forward bend. It has short, straight and squared forelegs and inclined hindlegs. This breed has an abundant medium length single coat which is soft and silky in texture, and wavy in appearance. The color of the coat can be different shades of wheaten.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is an agile breed. It is a spirited dog which is playful in nature. It is excellent with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised with cats as well as other small pets as it has a natural hunting tendency. This breed has excellent agility which makes it a good watchdog. It is a quick learning breed and hence easy to train. A straightforward and calm approach needs to be adopted while training this breed. This dog adapts well indoors as well as outdoors. If sufficiently exercised, it can do well in an apartment life.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier does not shed much hair but its soft and wavy coat needs extensive grooming. Combing its coat regularly is recommended for keeping the coat free of tangles and dirt. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes, ears and teeth should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. The hair around its eyes, ears and paws, and nails should be trimmed regularly. Some dry food or bone should be given to the dog to chew, in order to keep its teeth strong and clean.

This breed does not require much exercise. A long daily walk is sufficient to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. It is sensitive to warm climate so should be adequately protected.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Health Problems:

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is prone to some health issues like PLN (protein losing nephropathy), Renal dysplasia, Cancer, Skin Allergies etc.
