Border Terrier Information

Border Terrier Description:

The origin of the the Border Terrier lies in Scotland-England border, and hence its name. It is regarded as one of the oldest terrier breeds of Britain. Although the exact origin of the breed is unknown, it is believed to have descended from the same breed that Dandie Dinmont Terrier and the Bedlington Terrier descended. In the olden days, it was primarily used for hunting foxes. To increase its prey drive, it was also kept hungry for days on end, because of which it also developed the habit of hunting vermin and badgers for survival. The Border Terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 1930.

The Border Terrier is a medium sized breed with an strong, athletic frame. It has an otter-like head; medium sized eyes which are dark hazel in color; small sized ears which are V-shaped and carried close to the cheeks; a large nose which is black in color; a short muzzle which is strong and deep; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a slightly short tail which is set at the level of the back. The tail is strong at the base and tapers slightly towards the end. It is carried slightly above the level of the back at most times with no sign of curling. The tail may be dropped low when relaxed. It has medium sized legs which are strong, straight and muscular with small feet. It has a double coat with a short, dense and wiry outercoat and, a short and dense undercoat. The color of the coat can be red, blue and tan, grizzle and tan, or wheaten; may have little white markings on the chest.

The Border Terrier is an agile and obedient breed. It is a playful dog which is excellent with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised with smaller pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts. It is a people pleaser which makes it very easy to train. It can be slightly reserved with strangers and has a tendency to bark, which makes it a very good watchdog. However, it can be very afraid of loud noises and develop a timid attitude if not accustomed to them at an early age. Given the right amount of exercise, it is well suited to an apartment lifestyle.

Border Terrier Care & Grooming:

The Border Terrier sheds very little hair. The dense and very wiry coat of the dog needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 3-4 times a week and also a professional grooming 2-3 times a year to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. The eyes and ears of the dog should be cleaned properly.

It is an active breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential to make the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These need to be supplemented with jogging or running in an open but secure area to release the excess energy of the dog.

Border Terrier Health Problems:

The Border Terrier is prone to some health issues like hip Dysplasia, PRA, Seizures, Cataract, Perthes disease, Heart problems, CECS (Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome) etc.
