Pharaoh Hound Information

Pharaoh Hound Description:

The origin of the Pharaoh Hound lies in Egypt and can be traced back to 3000-4000 years ago. The exact origin of this breed is unknown. It was primarily used for hunting rabbits and other small game. Although a very popular breed in Malta since times immemorial, the breed was introduced in Britain only in the early 20th century. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1983.

The Pharaoh Hound is a medium sized dog with well defined features and a graceful gait. It has a pronounced head which is proportionate to the body with an alert expression; deep set, oval shaped eyes which are amber colored; medium set ears which taper towards the tip; a strong muzzle which tapers towards the end; a nose with flared nostrils and a color which is same as that of the coat; thin lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a medium set tail which is slightly curved towards the tip, broad at the base and is carried low. The Pharaoh Hound has strong, muscular and straight legs with firm feet which neither resemble the feet of the cat or that of the hare. Its coat is short, hard and glossy. The color of its coat can be various shades of red or tan with little white markings.

The Pharaoh Hound is an intelligent and an independent breed. However, despite being independent, it makes for a good companion dog as well as guard dog. It has an innate ability to guard its territory as well as livestock. It is easy to train and responds well to obedience training. With proper training it does well with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised with smaller pets such as rabbits, cats, rodents etc. as it has an innate ability to hunt these pets. If sufficiently exercised this dog can do okay in an apartment life, but is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Pharaoh Hound Care & Grooming:

The Pharaoh Hound is an average shedder. Its short and glossy coat is easy to maintain. Brushing its coat once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush and also rubbing its body with a damp towel once in a while are sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. Its nails should be trimmed regularly to avoid any injury.

It is an active breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Walks should be supplemented with jogging or running in an open but secure area to release the excess energy of the dog. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal. It is sensitive to very low temperature so should be adequately protected.

Pharaoh Hound Health Problems:

The Pharaoh Hound is prone to some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Skin and eye problems, Bloat etc.
