Ibizan Hound Information

Ibizan Hound Description:

The origin of the Ibizan Hound lies in the island of Ibiza, Spain. This breed is very similar to Pharaoh Hound and is the largest of the hound breeds. It is also believed to be one of the ancient breeds of the dogs. Although the exact origin of this breed is unknown, it is believed to be of the lineage of Tesem. Tesem were ancient Egyptian dogs which date back to 3400 BC. It is believed that Phoenicians brought these dogs with them when they settled in the area around the 8th century. The breed was primarily used for hunting rabbits because of its exceptional ability to run fast on any terrain. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1978.

The Ibizan Hound is a large sized dog with an athletic build and an ability to run fast on the most difficult of terrains. It has a long, chiseled head; oblique eyes which are usually caramel in color; large, prick ears which are always carried erect; a long muzzle which is slender and chiseled in appearance; a pronounced nose with a pinkish tone to it; thin, taut lips which are the same color as the nose and teeth which meet in a scissors bite. This breed has a long, low set tail with a slight curve towards the end and is carried below the line of the back. The legs are strong and straight but not muscular with hare like feet. This breed has 2 types of coat: one is short and straight, other type is wiry and little long. The colors of its coat can be white, red, white and red, or white and tan.

The Ibizan Hound is a calm, quiet and a very intelligent breed. With proper training it does well with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised with smaller pets such as rabbits, cats, rodents etc. as it has an innate ability to hunt these pets. This breed is slightly reserved with strangers. Thus, socializing at an early age is required to bring out the best behavior. It enjoys learning new things and thus, it is very easy to train. It is a sensitive breed and hence may not respond very well to strict discipline. Being a natural hunting dog, the breed makes for a very good guard dog. The breed is largely inactive indoors and if sufficiently exercised they can do okay in an apartment life, but is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Ibizan Hound Care & Grooming:

The Ibizan Hound is an average shedder. Their different type of coat is easy to maintain. Brushing its coat once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush and also rubbing its body with a damp towel once in a while are sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. Its nails should be trimmed regularly as it is known to grow nails very quickly.

It is an active breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Walks should be supplemented with jogging or running in an open but secure area to release the excess energy of the dog. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal.

Ibizan Hound Health Problems:

The Ibizan Hound is prone to some health issues like Seizures (referred to as a Fit), Skin allergies, Bloat etc.
