Borzoi Information

Borzoi Description:

The origin of the Borzoi lies in Russia. It is one of the oldest breeds of dogs known. The breed was bred by the royal class of Russia by crossbreeding the Russian sheepdogs with the Arabian Wolfhound. Some also believe that the ancient Saluki dogs may have a role in the ancestry of the Borzoi. The Borzoi was also called the Russian Wolfhound, since it was primarily used for hunting foxes, hares and wolves. However, the name was later changed to Borzoi, which is taken from a Russian word “Borzii” meaning swift. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1891.

The Borzoi is a large sized dog with an athletic frame. It has a long, narrow and chiseled head; low set ears which are small in size and lie close to the neck; oblique shaped eyes which are dark in color; a black nose with flared nostrils; a long, tapering muzzle; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a long tail which is set at the level of the back. The tail is carried low with a slight curve towards the end. This breed has long, slender legs with hare like feet. It has a long and silky coat which can either be flat or wavy. The color of the coat can be any solid color or also combination of any color.

The Borzoi is a quiet and an intelligent breed. It is not a very good companion dog for kids as it has lower tolerance levels for rough play. It is good with other dogs. However, caution is advised with non canine pets such as badgers, rats, hares, guinea pigs etc. because of the breed’s innate hunting instincts. It is not a people pleaser and thus, training this breed can be little difficult. A firm and consistent approach is required to train this breed. It has great eyesight but does not have a tendency to bark, which makes it an average watchdog. It adapts well to indoors as well as outdoor environment. If sufficiently exercised may adjust to an apartment life but more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Borzoi Care & Grooming:

The Borzoi is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Its long and silky coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week and almost daily during shedding season. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. The ears and eyes should be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around the eyes, ears and paws need to be trimmed regularly.

It is a working dog which needs lot of exercise. Long daily walks are essential to satisfy the dog’s primitive instinct to walk. Walks should be supplemented with jogging or running regularly. However, this breed should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area as it has an innate tendency to go after any prey it sees. This breed is prone to bloat so should not be overfed. Small frequent meals should be preferred over large meals. The dog should not be exercised after a meal.

Borzoi Health Problems:

The Borzoi is prone to some health issues like Bloat, Gastric torsion, PRA etc.
