Saluki Information

Saluki Description:

The Saluki is one of the oldest dog breeds known to man. The origins of the breed go as far back to 7th century BC. The breed is believed to derive its name from the ancient Arab town of Suluk in Libya. The breed is also known as the Persian Hound, the Arabian Hound or the Gazelle Hound. This breed has special significance in Islamic culture where it was considered sacred. According to Islamic faith, this breed is never sold, but is rather gifted to friends and family. In the olden days, it was used primarily as a hunting breed in rough and rocky desert terrains. The breed was first recognized by AKC in 1929.

The Saluki is a large breed with an athletic frame. It has a narrow and long head; ears are long and covered with hair; nose is black or liver in color; oval shaped eyes which are large and dark brown or hazel in color; a strong muzzle which tapers towards the end; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a low set tail which is long and is carried low. It has very long legs which are slender but well built in nature with medium sized feet. This breed has a short and silky coat, having a long and silky feather on tail, ears and legs. The acceptable colors of the coat are white, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan, black and tan, and a tricolor of white, black and tan.

The Saluki is a friendly and quiet breed. It is friendly with strangers and does well with kids, given the condition that it is not teased or provoked. It is great with other dogs, especially other Salukis. However, caution is advised with non canine animals such as rabbits, Guinea pigs, birds etc. because of the dog’s natural hunting instincts. Slightly aloof by nature, it makes for a good watchdog. It is an obedient breed and hence, it is easy to train. However, it is sensitive breed which does not respond very well to harsh discipline. A firm and consistent approach is required when training this breed. It does not adapt very well to an indoor environment and hence, it is not well suited to an apartment lifestyle.

Saluki Care & Grooming:

The Saluki is an average shedder. Brushing once in a week is sufficient to maintain a healthy coat. This breed is prone to infections of the ear. Thus, the ears should be cleaned regularly. It is also prone to diseases of the eye, so extra care should be taken of the eyes. Saluki is sensitive to very low temperature and prefers warm temperature.

The Saluki is a very active breed which needs lot of exercise. Long walks several times a day are necessary to help the dog release its’ pent up energy. Walks should be supplemented with running in an open area for physical as well as mental well being. However, it should not be left alone in an unsecured area because of its primal hunting instincts.

Saluki Health Problems:

Saluki prone to some health issues like cancer, heart murmur, dermatitis and alopecia. The primary cause of death of Saluki is cancer, most common is liver cancer.
