Afghan Hound also known as "a king of dogs” is a very elegant, strong, agile and peaceful dog. This is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. This breed was kept pure for centuries. This ancient breed is a native of Afghanistan. This dog is a member of Sighthound family, which means it hunts by sight. Initially Afghans were used for hunting.

Afghan Hound is ultimate in beauty and grace. This breed has a long and narrow head; muzzle is slightly curved; teeth are arranged in a level or scissors bite; neck is long and strong; nose is thick and black; eyes are dark and almond in shape; ears are flat, legs are long and strong; tail is long and has a curl at the tip. The most distinguished feature of Afghan is his long, smooth and silky coat.

The typical temperament of Afghan Hound is aloof and dignified. This is an independent breed so it is bit difficult to train them but once properly trained they can socialize well. This breed is very much devoted and loyal to his family and does not accept strangers easily. It makes him a good watch dog. Afghans generally do not get along with children easily, so it may not be a good family pet. Due to its hunting nature it does not accept other dogs and other small animals and can also try to attack them. Due to its large size, it needs large area to run and play. Afghans are not good choice for apartment life. This breed is courageous, loyal, affectionate and sensitive animal but with a low dominance level.

Afghan Hounds are large in size and relatively inactive indoors, so lots of daily exercises like long walk and jog are very much required to keep them healthy. They need large open spaces to play and run. This breed is extremely fast runner so never should be left alone in an unsecured area. Their living area should be securely fenced. They love to stay in outdoors but prefer to sleep indoors. Afghans need lots of attention and maintenance.

This breed is an average shedder. Its long and silky coat needs lots of grooming. They need weekly baths and regular brushing to avoid tangles and matt. Proper brush should be used and they should not be brushed in between their bath in order to keep their coat healthy.

Afghan Hound is generally a healthy and long living breed, with a less health related issues. They may suffer from hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism, Enzyme deficiencies, Cataracts and Bloat. As they get older may prone to cancer.
