Harrier Information

Harrier Description:

The origin of the Harrier dates back to the 13th century when Sir Elias Medophe developed the first pack of Harriers in England. There are many stories related to the creation of this breed. Some stories relate the creation of this breed to cross breeding between Fox Terrier and Greyhound while others relate it to cross breeding between Bloodhound and Talbot Hound. The breed derives its name from its ability to hunt hares, and this was primarily the use of this breed in the olden days. Later on, the breed was also used to hunt fox. This breed was largely popular in England as well as Ireland, and this popularity continues to this day. The breed was first recognized by AKC in 1885.

The Harrier is a medium sized dog with a sturdy frame. It has a proportionate head with a relaxed yet agile expression. It has medium sized eyes which are shades of brown or hazel in color; low set ears which lie close to the face; a wide nose with opened nostrils; a short, square muzzle with thin lips and teeth which meet in scissors bite. The tail is set high with a slight curve towards the third half of the tail. However, the tail is never curved over the back. The coat of this breed is short, hard, dense and glossy, and can be of any color.

Being a hunting breed, this dog is energetic and playful. It has an affectionate disposition and is excellent with kids and other pets. However, caution is advised when with non canine pets. They have a good sense of smell which can distract them often. Due to the distraction, they can be hard to train. Patience is required to train this breed. It is a very active breed and is not suitable for apartment life. It has a tendency to go after interesting scents and should be not off the leash when in an open area. Their agility and instinctive hunting ability makes them a good watchdog.

Harrier Care & Grooming:

The Harrier is an average shedder. The short and dense coat is easy to maintain. Brushing once in a week is sufficient to maintain the natural shine of the coat. It should be bathed only when necessary using a mild shampoo. The breed has a tendency to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. Small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal.

Being a hunting breed, it requires a lot of exercise. Daily long walks are recommended for effective emotional and physical development of the breed. Vigorous exercise in an open area is advised every now and then to fill the natural wandering tendencies of this breed.

Harrier Health Problems:

There are no specific genetic disorders associated with the breed. However the Harrier is prone to some health issues like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, ear and eye allergies etc.
