Black And Tan Coonhound Information

Black And Tan Coonhound Description:

The origin of Black and Tan Coonhound lies in the United States. The breed dates back to the 18th century and owes its ancestry to the now extinct Talbot Hound. The breed is a result of crossbreeding between the Talbot Hound, the Foxhound, the Bloodhound and the Virginia Foxhound. This breed was one of the first types of hounds to be recognized as a separate breed. It was primarily used for hunting games such as raccoon, bear, rabbit etc. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1945.

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a medium to large sized dog with a slender, athletic frame. It has a chiseled head which is proportionate to the body; round eyes which are medium in size and dark brown or hazel in color; low set ears which hang on either side; a black nose; a strong muzzle with a squarish appearance; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a long tail which is set high. The tail is carried in an erect fashion with a slight curve towards the end. The tail is strong at the base and tapers to a point. It has long, slender legs and small, well padded feet. This breed has a short, dense and glossy coat. The color of the coat is a solid black with tan markings.

The Black and Tan Coonhound is an intelligent, hard working breed. It is okay with children if socialized well at an early age. However, it may not take too kindly to rough play. It can be dominant towards other dogs and hence, proper socializing is required at an early age. Caution is advised with non canine pets such as rabbits, birds etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts. The breed is friendly with strangers which does not make it a very good watchdog or a guarddog. However, it is a people pleaser and thus, makes for a very good companion breed. It does not adapt very well to an indoor environment. It is not well suited to an apartment life and is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Black And Tan Coonhound Care & Grooming:

The Black and Tan Coonhound is an average shedder. Its short and smooth coat is easy to maintain. Brushing once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush and rubbing its body with a damp towel once in a week are sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed regularly using a mild shampoo. Regular trimming of the nails is advised to avoid injuries. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection.

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a hunting breed which requires daily exercise. Long walks are essential to satisfy the dog’s primal instinct to walk. Walks should be supplemented with jogging or running in an open area regularly. However, it should not be let off the leash in an unsecured area as it has a tendency to go after interesting scents and has strong hunting instincts. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. Small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal. It is sensitive to very high or very low temperatures so should be adequately protected.

Black And Tan Coonhound Health Problems:

The Black and Tan Coonhound is prone to some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Ear cancer, Eye problems, Obesity etc.
