Canaan Dog Information

Canaan Dog Description:

The history of the Canaan Dog is about 10,000 years old. Historical evidence suggests that ancient Arabs used Canaan like dogs for guarding their camps and for herding cattle. The nomadic Arabs still use these dogs for the same purpose. The breed was first bred in 1930s by Dr. Menzel. She bred some wild Canaan dogs of Israel and supplied them to the army for mining operations and search and rescue operations. Three decades later, four of the specimens were shipped to US, hence marking the dogs’ foray into the United States. It was first recognized by the AKC in 1997.

The Canaan is a medium sized dog with a square body and well defined features. It has moderate wedge shaped head proportionate to the rest of the body; a long and tapering muzzle; large ears which stand erect and taper at the tip; almond shaped eyes which are shades of hazel in color; pigmented nose with wide nostrils; taut but thin lips which are dark colored and teeth which meet in scissors bite. The tail of this breed is set-high which a prominent curl and is carried over the back. The legs are strong, straight and moderate in length with cat like feet. This bred has a double coat with a hard, dense and straight outer coat which is little harsh to touch, and a soft and dense undercoat. This color of its coat cane be either white with a mask and, with or without patches of any other color; or Solid colored like black, brown, red, liver etc. with or without white trim.

It is an intelligent breed with an innate ability for hunting and retrieving. It is independent as well as obedient. However, it can be reserved with strangers as well as aggressive towards other dogs and pets. Socializing at an early age is required to bring you the best behavior in this breed. It is easy to train but variations are required for training this breed since it gets bored with repetition. It is extremely loyal and has an innate ability to guard and protect its territory. Hence, it makes for an excellent watchdog. If sufficiently exercised it can do okay in an apartment life but is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Canaan Dog Care & Grooming:

The Canaan Dog is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Its straight and dense coat needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 2-3 times a week and almost daily during shedding season. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly.

This is an active dog which needs lots of exercise. Daily long walks are vital to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These should be supplemented with jogging or running every now and then in an open but secured area. It is sensitive to very high temperature so should be adequately protected.

Canaan Dog Health Problems:

The Canaan Dog is prone to some health issues like Epilepsy, hip and elbow Dysplasia, Cryptorchidism, Retinal atrophy etc.
