Pyrenean Shepherd Information

Pyrenean Shepherd Description:

The origin of the Pyrenean Shepherd lies in France. Although the exact origin of the Pyrenean Shepherd is unknown, certain evidence suggests that this dog has been bred since medieval times. The breed derives its name from a variety of sheep in France for which it was used for herding and guarding. This breed played an important role in the First World War when it acted as a courier, a watchdog and also as a rescue worker. However, despite the breed’s innate intelligence, the popularity of the breed failed to grow outside France. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 2009.

The Pyrenean Shepherd is a medium sized dog with a lean body and an intelligent expression. It has a triangular head proportionate in size to the body; almond shaped large eyes which are dark brown in color; short ears which are broad at the base and taper towards the tip; a straight, long muzzle which is wedge shaped; black nose with wide nostrils; taut lips with a smile like expression and teeth which meet in scissors bite or an even bite. The tail of this breed is low-set and is docked in most cases. However, it can be long too but should never be carried above the level of the body. The legs of this breed are moderate length, straight and muscular with oval shaped feet. It has 2 types of coat – Smooth faced and Rough faced. Smooth faced type has short and smooth hair on its face, and soft, fine and medium in length hair on body. Rough faced type has little harsh hair on the face, and long and flat or little wavy hair on body. The colors of its coat can be various shades of fawn, with or without black colored hair; shades of grey; brindle, black or black with white markings.

The Pyrenean Shepherd is an intelligent dog. It is generally reserved with people. It has a tendency to bark incessantly at the tiniest of threats. Although it seems like an obedient breed, it is difficult to train. It requires a lot of patience and dedication for proper training. This breed can get bored easily with routine tasks and hence, constant innovation is required when training it. Socialization is required at an early age to acquaint it with children, pets and human beings. It does not require much space and hence, is well suited to an apartment life.

Pyrenean Shepherd Care & Grooming:

The Pyrenean Shepherd is an average shedder. Brushing its coat once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush is sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. Its nail and the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly. Its beard should be cleaned daily to remove any food remains.

This is a high energy breed which needs regular exercise. Daily long walks are recommended to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. However, the exercise schedule should be mixed and changed regularly to avoid boredom and for optimum mental development of this breed. It should not be left alone for too long as it can lead to behavioral symptoms.

Pyrenean Shepherd Health Problems:

The Pyrenean Shepherd is prone to some health issues like hip and elbow Dysplasia, Skin and ear infections etc.
