Belgian Tervuren Information

Belgian Tervuren Description:

The origin of the Belgian Tervuren lies in Tervuren village of Belgium. This breed comprises of the four Belgian Shepherd breeds, the other three being Belgian Groenendale, Belgian Malinois and Belgian Laekenois. In some countries, the three breeds categorized as the same breed. The exact origin of the breed is unknown, but it is thought to have descended from the same breed like the other three Belgian Shepherd breed. It was primarily used for guarding livestock specially sheep and hunting small animals. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1959.

The Belgian Tervuren is a medium to large sized breed with a square, well built frame. It has a long, well defined head which is in proportion to the body; almond shaped eyes which are medium in size and dark brown in color; high set ears which are triangular in shape and carried erect; black colored nose with flared nostrils; a squarish muzzle which tapers towards the end; tight, black lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a medium set tail which is strong at the base and slightly tapers to a point towards the end. The tail is carried downwards when relaxed. It has medium sized legs with elongated, well padded feet. This breed has a double coat with a long, straight, dense and slightly hard outer coat, and a soft and dense undercoat. The color of the coat can be fawn to russet mahogany with black markings.

The Belgian Tervuren is an obedient and a high energy breed. It is good with kids. However, it can be dominant towards other dogs if not socialized at an early age. Caution is advised with small, non canine pets such as rabbit, rat, guinea pig etc. because of the breed’s strong hunting instincts. It has strong protective instincts and a strong sense of smell as well as sight. This makes it an excellent guard dog and a very good watchdog. It is an obedient breed which is easy to train. However, it can be demanding of its owner’s attention. Thus, this breed is not recommended for beginners or those who cannot give enough time to the dog. It adapts well to indoor as well as outdoor environment so is suited to an apartment life but is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Belgian Tervuren Care & Grooming:

The Belgian Tervuren is an average shedder and shed heavily during spring and fall. Its long and dense coat needs extensive grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 3-4 times a week with a firm bristle brush and also need to be rubbed occasionally with a damp towel. The coat should also be trimmed regularly to prevent matting of the hair. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly.

This is an active dog which needs lots of exercise, mentally as well as physically. Daily long walks are vital to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These should be supplemented with jogging or running every now and then in an open but secured area. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals. It has a tendency to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal. It is sensitive to very high temperature so should be adequately protected.

Belgian Tervuren Health Problems:

The Belgian Tervuren is generally a healthy breed with some health issues like Bloat, Skin and eye allergies, Epilepsy, hip and elbow Dysplasia etc.
