Polish Lowland Sheepdog Information

Polish Lowland Sheepdog Description:

The origin of the Polish Lowland Sheepdog lies in Poland. The popularity of these dogs soared in the 14th century when a Polish merchant named Kazimierz Grabski bought these dogs for sheep herding. The breed derives its name from its phenomenal ability of sheep herding. It was primarily used for herding sheep and other cattle. Like most other breeds, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog faced extinction after the Second World War. It was due to the concerted efforts of Dr. Hyrniewicz that the breed was resurrected. Dr. Hyrniewicz is considered the father of modern Polish Lowland Sheepdog. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 2001.

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a medium sized dog with a well built frame. It is characterized by hair which covers its eyes and which give it a shaggy appearance. It has a head of moderate size and proportionate to the body; oval shaped eyes which are medium sized and brown color; high set ears which are heart shaped; a proportionate and deep muzzle; a large nose which is black or brown in color; taut, black lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a low-set tail which is naturally docked or may be docked intentionally. The legs of this breed are short and stout with heavy muscle density and oval feet. It has a double coat with long and straight hair covering almost all parts of the body. The outer coat is dense, slightly coarse and a weather resistant, while the undercoat is soft and dense. Its coat can be of any color like black, grey, chocolate, white with black etc.

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is an alert and an intelligent breed. It is an independent breed which is at its happiest when it is given work to do. It is excellent with children as well as other pets. Socialization is needed at an early age to bring out its best behavior. It is obedient and hence, very easy to train. It is reserved with strangers so is a good watch dog. It is comfortable both indoor as well as outdoor and hence is well suited to an apartment life.

Polish Lowland Sheepdog Care & Grooming:

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog sheds little hair. Its long and thick coat needs regular grooming. Its coat needs to be brushed 3-4 times in a week with a firm bristle brush to maintain a healthy looking coat. The coat should also be trimmed regularly to prevent matting of the hair. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. Its nail and the hair around ears, eyes and paws should also be trimmed regularly.

This is an active dog which needs lots of exercise, mentally as well as physically. Daily long walks are vital to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These should be supplemented with jogging or running every now and then in an open but secured area. It has a tendency to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. It is sensitive to very high temperature so should be adequately protected. This dog needs a low Protein diet.

Polish Lowland Sheepdog Health Problems:

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is prone to some health issues like hip Dysplasia, PRA etc.
