Beauceron Information

Beauceron Description:

The origin of the Beauceron dates back to 16th Century. Although the name suggests that the breed originated in the Beauce region of France, the exact origins of the breed cannot be determined. This breed belongs to the lineage of the Briard, which is an ancient sheep herding dog. This dog breed was primarily used for herding sheep and other cattle. During the First and the Second World War, it was also used as a messenger as well as for mine detecting purposes and assisting the army in various operations. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 2007.

The Beauceron is a large sized dog with a well balanced body and an agile manner. It has a well defined, long head; oval shaped eyes which are dark brown or hazel in color; high set ears which are short, have a half pricked shape and lie away from the cheeks; a strong muzzle which is slightly square in shape; a black nose with wide nostrils; dark colored lips with the upper lip overlapping the lower one and teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a low set tail with a slight J shape and is always carried down. The legs of this breed are long, straight and muscular with compact feet. This breed has a double coat with a coarse and dense outer coat, and a soft and dense undercoat. The color of its coat can be black and tan.

The Beauceron is a loyal and courageous breed. It is affectionate with children and is a well known companion breed. At the same time, it is an intelligent breed with an innate ability to sniff out danger. Thus, it makes for a good guard dog and a watch dog too. This breed has a tendency to please others and thus, responds very well to obedience training. It takes time to mature, although it grows very quickly. It is excellent with other dogs. However, socializing at an early age is required to bring out their best behavior. This breed does not adapt very well to an indoor environment. So it is not well suited to an apartment life and needs at least an average sized yard to roam around.

Beauceron Care & Grooming:

The Beauceron is a seasonal shedder. Its short and thick coat is easy to maintain. Brushing its coat once or twice in a week with a firm bristle brush and almost daily brushing during shedding season is sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary using a mild shampoo. However, extra care should be taken of its feet since it is a heavy breed and a lot of pressure is put on the feet. Regular trimming of the nails is advised to avoid injuries. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection.

This is a working dog and thus requires lots of exercise, physically as well as mentally. Daily long walks are essential to fulfill the natural needs of the dog to walk. Walks should be supplemented with jogging or running every now and then in an open but secured fenced area. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal.

Beauceron Health Problems:

The Beauceron is prone to some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Entropion, Bloat etc.
