Puli Information

Puli Description:

The origin of the Puli lies in Hungary where they arrived along with the Magyars. The exact ancestry of the breed is unknown. However, according to popular belief, they are believed to be the lineage of the Poodle. In the olden days, it was used to herding and guarding cattle along with the much larger Kuvasz breed. It was primarily a nocturnal breed in those days. It used to sleep during the day and guard the livestock during night. However, by the end of the Second World War, the breed became almost extinct. It was through dedicated breeding programs that the breed was resurrected. However, it has been unable to regain its lost popularity. The breed was first recognized by AKC in 1936.

The Puli is a medium sized, square shaped breed with an affectionate expression. It has a medium sized proportionate head; large eyes which are almond shaped and dark brown or grey in color; V-shaped, high-set ears slightly away from the cheeks; a strong and straight muzzle; black nose with flared nostrils; black lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. The tail of this breed is feathery with a strong curve and merges into the backline. The legs of this breed are small but strong and straight. It has a double coat which is water resistant and covers almost all parts of the body. The outer coat is dense and curly with a slightly coarse feel to it while the undercoat is soft and dense. The acceptable colors of the coat are black, rusty black, gray and white.

The Puli is an intelligent and a cheerful dog. It is excellent with other dogs and other pets also. However, caution is advised with children as children can become aggressive which the dog may not like. It is reserved with strangers, although not very aggressive. It is fiercely loyal and protect the owner at the slightly pretext of threat. It is an innately intelligent breed which makes it easy to train. However, a firm hand is needed in order to obedience train them. Having an innate ability to guard livestock, it is a good watchdog. It is comfortable indoors as well as outdoors and is well suited to apartment life. It is well suited to both cold as well as warm temperatures.

Puli Care & Grooming:

The Puli does not shed but its corded coat needs little extra attention. However, when young, the coat separation may be needed regularly. The outer coat of the breed begins to be formed when the dog is around 6 months old and it begins to mingle with the undercoat. Separation by hand is required for proper care of the coat. It should be bathed whenever required and proper care should be taken to make its coat completely dry after each bath. Apart from that, the nails should be trimmed properly and eyes and ears should be cleaned on a regular basis.

It is an energetic breed and requires a daily walk. Occasional running around in an open yard is recommended for healthy development of the breed.

Puli Health Problems:

The Puli does not have any particular genetic disorders. However, it is prone to hip dysplasia and allergies of the eye.

Puli
Breed: Puli
Name: Jun
Age: 15.3 years
Sex: Male
About Jun : Well this may sound harsh, but i was having trubole with my 4 yr old son just peeing/pooping on himself when wearing underwear, unless i asked him if he had to go or told him to go potty. I warned him, if he pooped in his underwear again or peed on himself (he had perfect access to the bathroom and could easily take himself), that I would give him a cold shower and he wouldn't get underwear or anything on his butt accept his pants. He didn't believe me, so yesterday when he pooped in his underwear, I put him in the cold shower and told him I warned him about pooping/peeing in his underwear. He didn't like that one bit. So far today he has been taking himself to the bathroom. Yep, i was at my wits end. I got so sick and tired of having to constantly ask him if he had to go or telling him to go, and if i was too busy to remember, i'd have a huge mess to clean up. I had to do the same thing with my daughter when she wouldn't quit playing in her poopy diapers. She doesn't do that anymore! So you can either take away her underwear, warn her about getting a cold shower if she poops in her underwear, or both. She is too big to not be pooping in her potty.References :
