Norwegian Buhund Information

Norwegian Buhund Description:

The origin of the Norwegian Buhund lies in Norway. They belong to the lineage of the Vikings. According to historical evidence, the Norwegian Buhund was a companion to the Vikings in the olden days on their many important journeys. This breed was largely used as a guard dog and for herding livestock. It was only in the 20th century that the breed became popular in Norway following the first dog show for the breed. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 2009.

The Norwegian Buhund is a medium sized dog with a strong, square shaped build. It has a wedge shaped head proportionate to the body; a proportionate muzzle which is slightly square shaped; oval shaped eyes which are dark in color; medium sized ears which have a prick shape; a black nose with flared nostrils; black taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a feathered tail which has a well pronounced curl and is carried over the back. The legs are strong, straight and of medium length with oval shaped feet. This breed has a double coat with a hard, thick, straight and medium in length outer coat, and a soft and dense undercoat. The color of its coat can be black or different shades of wheat.

Norwegian Buhund was used primarily as a watchdog in the olden days. It retains its traits of attentiveness and agility and thus makes for a great watchdog. It has a calm demeanor and is not aggressive by nature. The Norwegian Buhund is excellent with kids as well as other pets and makes for a good house dog. It is an eager to learn breed and thus, it is very easy to train. Socializing is required at an early age to bring out the best behavior. It adapts well to indoor as well as outdoor environment so is suited to an apartment life but is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Norwegian Buhund Care & Grooming:

The Norwegian Buhund is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Its hard and dense coat is easy to maintain. The coat needs to be brushed 2-3 times a week and almost daily during shedding season. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly.

It is an active breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Walks should be supplemented with jogging or running in an open but secure area to release the excess energy of the dog. It has a tendency to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal. It is sensitive to very high temperature so should be adequately protected.

Norwegian Buhund Health Problems:

The Norwegian Buhund is prone to some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Eye infection, Bloat etc.
