Cardigan Welsh Corgi Information

Cardigan Welsh Corgi Description:

The origin of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi lies in Ceredigion, Wales. The breed is regarded as one of the oldest herding breeds in the world along with Pembroke Welsh Corgi, both the breeds being considered same until 1934. Both the breeds are said to date back to more than thousand years ago and are believed to be the descendants of the same breed. Although the exact origin of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is unknown, it is believed to have descended from Keeshond, Swedish Vallhund and Schipperkes. In the olden days, it was primarily used for guarding and herding cattle. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was first recognized by the AKC in 1935.

The CWC is a small sized breed with a long, low lying frame. It has a proportionate head; medium sized eyes which may be dark or blue in color; large ears which are carried erect at all times with a slight forward bend; a black nose; a short muzzle which slightly tapers towards the nose; taut lips which are black in color with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a proportionate tail which is low set and feathered. The tail is carried downwards when relaxed and may be carried level with the back when excited. However, it is never curled over the line of the back. It has short, straight legs with large, well padded feet. It has a double coat with a medium length weather resistant outercoat which is harsh to touch and, a short, soft and dense undercoat. The color of the coat can be different shade of red, sable or brindle; or black with or without tan or brindle points; or Blue merle with or without tan or brindle points; and usually having white marks on the neck, chest, muzzle, legs, under parts, tip of the tail and as a blaze on head.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is an intelligent breed and a people pleaser. It is very obedient and easy to train. It is good with kids. However, it won’t tolerate too much rough handling. It is good with other pets, although it can be a little dominant towards other dogs if not socialized well. This breed is reserved with strangers and makes for a good watchdog as well as a guard dog. However, it is prone to Small Dog Syndrome. Strong leadership is required to prevent behavioral issues. Given the right amount of exercise, it adapts well to an apartment life.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi Care & Grooming:

The CWC is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Brushing 2-3 times a week and almost daily brushing during shedding season is sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. The hair around its eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed regularly.

It is an active breed which needs daily exercise. Daily long walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Walks should be supplemented with jogging, running or a romp in an open area regularly. This breed is prone to gain weight easily so should not be overfed.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi Health Problems:

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is prone to some issues like Cancer, PRA, Back problems, Neurological disorders etc.
