Field Spaniel Information

Field Spaniel Description:

The origin of the Field Spaniel lies in England and dates back to the 19th century. Back then, the dog was bred primarily to be an all black show dog and was not used for hunting purposes. However, in the latter part of the 19th century, a certain Phineas Bullock crossed the breed with English Water Spaniel and Sussex Spaniel and resulted in a breed almost similar to the Sussex Spaniel. Down the years, the breed was further crossbred with English Springer Spaniels and Basset Hounds, resulting in the modern Field Spaniel. However, despite various dedicated breeding programs, the breed is considered one of the rare dog breeds. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1894.

The Field Spaniel is a medium sized dog with a slightly elongated frame. It has a pronounced head proportionate to the body; medium sized eyes, almond in shape and hazel or dark brown in color; medium set ears which hang loose and close to the cheeks; a strong muzzle with a slightly tapering experience; large nose with flared nostrils and black in color; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a low set tail which hangs down when in its natural shape. However, in most cases, the tail is docked. It has medium-length, strong legs with large, webbed feet. The coat of this breed is medium in length, dense, silky, glossy, flat or slightly wavy, and also water resistant. The color of the coat can be black or various shades of liver.

The Field Spaniel is a docile yet active breed. It is excellent with kids as well as other dogs. However, with its innate hunting ability, caution is advised with smaller pets such as rabbits, cats, rats etc. It can be reserved with strangers, which makes it a good watchdog. If socialized at an early age, it can be friendly with strangers as well as other pets. It is an obedient breed, which makes it easy to train. It is a sensitive breed so a calm and consistent approach should be adopted when training this breed. Being a natural hunting breed and an active dog, it is not well suited to an apartment life.

Field Spaniel Care & Grooming:

The Field Spaniel is an average shedder. Combing or brushing of the coat with a firm bristle brush at least 2-3 times a week is required to remove dead hair and prevent matting of the coat. Its fast growing coat may need to be trimmed frequently. It should be bathed only when necessary and needs to be dried properly after each bath. Its low hanging ears tend to get infection so proper care should be taken to clean the ears. Hair around its ears, eyes and paws need to be trimmed regularly.

This is a high energy breed which needs a lot of exercise. Long daily walks are recommended which should be supplemented with jogging or running in an open area. It should not be let off the leash, as it has a tendency to run after small animals.

Field Spaniel Health Problems:

The Field Spaniel is prone to some health issues like Cataract, Retinal atrophy, hip Dysplasia, Ear infections, Cancer etc.
