Welsh Springer Spaniel Information

Welsh Springer Spaniel Description:

The origin of the Welsh Springer Spaniel goes back to the 16th century. The exact origin of the breed is unknown still It is thought to be a close cousin of the English Springer Spaniel. The breed was earlier called as Welsh Spaniel and also as Welsh Cocker Spaniel. However, later, the breed was differentiated when the spaniels were identified as land spaniels and water spaniels. The breed was largely used for springing small game in rough terrain. Like most other dog breeds, this breed too was on the verge of extinction after the Second World War. Dedicated breeding programs were started during the 1920s and 1930s, giving birth to the Welsh Springer Spaniel we know today. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1914.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a medium sized dog with a well built frame meant to withstand rough terrain. It has a proportionate head; oval shaped eyes, medium in size and dark brown in color; low set ears which lie close to the head and have a leaf like appearance; a slightly elongated muzzle which is proportionate to the size of the head; a black nose with flared nostrils; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed usually has a docked tail which is set high and is carried horizontally, in line with the back. It has short but well muscled legs with well padded feet. Its ears and tail are lightly feathered. This breed has a soft coat which is straight in appearance and moderately long. Its moderately dense coat is both water and weather resistant. The color of the coat is a combination of red and white.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a lovable and loyal breed. It is good with children as well as other dogs and pets. It can be reserved with strangers, which makes it a good watchdog. However, it can be a little difficult to train. A consistent approach is required to train this breed. It is a sensitive breed which does not respond very well to harsh discipline. It has a tendency to wander off far from its base and thus, must be trained at an early age to follow commands. If given the right amount of exercise, it adapts well to an apartment life, but is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Welsh Springer Spaniel Care & Grooming:

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is an average shedder. The long and thick coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week and almost daily during shedding season, to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. The ears and eyes should be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and the hair around the ears, eyes and paws need to be trimmed regularly. Its long hanging ears tend to accumulate dirt so special care needs to be taken of the ears.

It is a high energy breed which needs plenty of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential for emotional as well as physical well being of the dog. These should be supplemented with jogging, running, swimming and other games to allow the dog to release its pent up energy. It tends to gain weight easily so should not be overfed.

Welsh Springer Spaniel Health Problems:

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is prone to some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Glaucoma, Otitis extrena, Epilepsy etc.
