Clumber Spaniel Information

Clumber Spaniel Description:

The origin of the Clumber Spaniel lies in Clumber Park, England. However, the exact history of this dog breed remains uncertain. The Clumber Spaniel is believed to be a result of cross breeding between Bassett Hound, Alpine Spaniel and Saint Bernard. A theory pertaining to the origin of this breed suggests that the Duke of France, at the time of the French Revolution, gave his set of Spaniels to the Duke of Newcastle, where they were perfected and hence, the Clumber Spaniel was born. It was primarily used for hunting birds like pheasant and partridge. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1884.

The Clumber Spaniel is a medium sized dog with an elongated, low lying frame. It has a large head; a large nose which is brown in color; a strong, square muzzle; low set long feathery ears which lie close to the head and are triangular in shape; large eyes which are amber in color; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. The tail of this breed is usually docked, high set and is carried in line with the back. This breed has strong, straight but small legs with large feet. It has a weather resistant coat which is moderately long, soft, dense, straight and lying flat. The color of the coat is always white with slight markings of orange or lemon.

The Clumber Spaniel is an easy-going hunting breed. It is excellent with children. It can be reserved with strangers and thus, it makes for a good watchdog. Caution is advised with small pets such as cats, birds, hares because of this breed’s natural hunting tendency. This breed is a people pleaser which makes it easy to train. However, it does not respond very well to harsh discipline. A calm and consistent approach is required to train this breed. It is a quite breed, not very active in nature and thus is well suited to an apartment life.

Clumber Spaniel Care & Grooming:

The Clumber Spaniel is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Its soft and dense coat needs extensive grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 3-4 times a week and almost daily, during the shedding season. The coat should also be trimmed regularly to prevent matting of the hair. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly. Its low hanging ears tend to accumulate dirt so special care should be taken care of it.

This is an active dog which needs daily exercise. Daily long walks are vital to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These should be supplemented with jogging or running every now and then in an open but secured area. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals. It has a tendency to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed.

Clumber Spaniel Health Problems:

The Clumber Spaniel is prone to some health issues like Cataract, Skin allergies, hip Dysplasia etc.
