Sussex Spaniel Information

Sussex Spaniel Description:

The Sussex Spaniel is one of the rare breeds in the world. It was first developed in the 18th century in Sussex, England by a certain Mr. Fuller. This breed was developed by crossbreeding various breeds such as the Field Spaniel, Springer Spaniel and Norflox Spaniel. It was primarily used for hunting small game. In fact, the breed was created to counter the rough terrain in various parts of England. The characteristic of this breed is the barking ability which not many other Spaniels have. It was a popular breed in the 19th century. However, like most other dog breeds, the Sussex Spaniel too faced extinction after the Second World War. It was due to the concerted efforts of a woman named Joy Freer that this breed was revived. The Sussex Spaniel was first recognized by the AKC in 1884.

The Sussex Spaniel is a small to medium sized dog with a muscular built and an elongated body. It has a large head with a prominent skull with a meek expression; soft eyes which are hazel colored; low-set ears which are lobe shaped; a well filled muzzle which is square in shape; a black nose with wide nostrils; pendulous lips which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a docked tail which is carried in line or below the level of the back. The tail is uniform in width throughout with slight feathers at the end of the tail. It has strong but short legs with large feet. Its ears, legs and tail are well feathered. The coat of this breed is soft, very dense, glossy and medium in length which is either flat or little wavy. The color of its coat is only golden liver.

The Sussex Spaniel is a calm and hard working breed. However, although it is a hunting breed, it has slightly low energy levels compared to other breeds. It tends to be relaxed and laid back when not in the field. Thus, it is well suited to an apartment life. It is excellent with kids as well as other pets. Hence, it makes for a good companion breed too. It has a habit to incessantly bark at the slightest of threats and thus, makes for a good watchdog. It is an obedient breed. However, patience and repetition is needed when training it.

Sussex Spaniel Care & Grooming:

The Sussex Spaniel is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Its soft and dense coat needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed 3-4 times a week and almost daily, during the shedding season. The coat should also be trimmed regularly to prevent matting of the hair. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes, ears and teeth need to be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and, the hair around ears, eyes and paws should be trimmed regularly. Its low hanging ears tend to accumulate dirt so special care should be taken care of.

Being a hunting breed, it requires regular exercise. A daily long walk is recommended for optimum mental and physical fitness of the breed. The walks should be supplemented with a good run in an open but secured area every once in a while. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed. It is sensitive to very high or very low temperature so should be adequately protected.

Sussex Spaniel Health Problems:

The Sussex Spaniel is prone to some health issues l like hip Dysplasia, Heart disease, Respiratory problem, Ear and eye problems etc
