Curly Coated Retriever Information

Curly Coated Retriever Description:

The origin of the Curly Coated Retriever dates back to the 18th century. Its origin lies in England where it was primarily used for hunting waterfowl, ducks and birds. Although its exact lineage is unknown, it is believed to be a result of crossbreeding between Irish Water Spaniel, Poodle and English Water Spaniel. The Curly Coated Retriever is one of the oldest breed of retrievers and also the tallest. In the olden days, it was very popular in England. It was first recognized by the AKC in 1924.

This is a large to large sized dog with a proportionate body. The head is large but in proportion to the body. It has large eyes which are almond shaped; a straight, long and tapering muzzle; small ears which lie close to the head; a pigmented nose with flared nostrils; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a straight tail which is carried in line with the body or slightly below it. The tail tapers towards the end but is never curled over the back. It has strong straight legs of medium length. It has a distinctive coat which is made of small, dense, tight curls which are slightly coarse in nature, and is both water and weather resistant. The color of its coat can be black or liver.

The Curly Coated Retriever is an intelligent breed with good agility and an innate hunting ability in the water. It is an easy-going breed and with proper training it mingles well with children as well as other pets. Caution is advised with small, non canine pets such as rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, birds etc. because of the breed’s strong hunting instincts. However, socializing is required at an early age to bring out the best behavior. Being an intelligent breed, it is easily trainable. This breed has an outdoor personality and thus, may not adjust very well to an apartment life. Given the agility and natural hunting ability of the dog, this breed makes for a very good watchdog as well as a good companion on treks and trails.

Curly Coated Retriever Care & Grooming:

The Curly Coated Retriever is an average shedder. Its curly coat is easy to maintain. Regular brushing is required only during the shedding season. Brushing is not recommended otherwise as it makes the hair wiry. Its body should be rubbed with a damp towel once in a week. It should be bathed only when necessary and Occasional trimming of the coat is also recommended. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection.

This is a high energy breed which needs a lot of exercise. Daily Long walks are necessary to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These should be supplemented with jogging, running and swimming on a regular basis. However, it should not be let off the leash in an open area as it has a tendency to chase small animals. It tends to gain weight easily so should not be overfed. This dog is prone to bloat, so small frequent meals are recommended instead of a large meal.

Curly Coated Retriever Health Problems:

The Curly Coated Retriever is prone to some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Bloat, Epilepsy, Cancer, Eye and skin problems etc.
