Vizsla Information

Vizsla Description:

Written records of the Vizsla (Pronunciation: veesh-la) have been found to be as old as the 10th century. With its origins in Hungary, the dog was primarily used as a hunting dog, used for hunting animals like rabbit and wolf because of its excellent smelling sense and agility. The dog is believed to have originated from pointer breeds like the Transylvanian hounds and Turkish Yellow Dog. The breed derives its name from Vizsla which is Hungarian for pointer. This breed of dog almost faced extinction after the Second World War when the Russians invaded Hungary. However, some samples of the breed were smuggled to Austria and America. This breed was first recognized by AKC in 1960.

This medium dog breed has a lean and athletic frame. It has a moderate head with a square, tapering muzzle; a nose which resembles the body color; low-set, silky, proportionate ears; deep-set eyes; taut lips with a well defined jaw and teeth which meet in scissors bite. It has a straight tail in line with the body which is docked in proportion to the body size. The forelegs of this breed are muscular with elbows close together while the hindlegs are straight with only slight angulation. Its coat is short, smooth and dense, and color can be different shades of golden rust.

This dog breed is a gentle and loving breed and is extremely obedient by nature. It is very energetic and loves to play for long hours. Given its hunting abilities, it is very easy to train and can make for an excellent watchdog as well as a retriever. However, a firm hand is needed while training them. Lack of leadership skills while training this dog breed can lead to behavioral problems. Although gentle and loving in disposition, this dog breed can be highly protective of its owner as well as its personal belongings, if not taught where to draw the line.

Vizsla Care & Grooming:

The Vizsla is an average shedder. Its short and dense coat requires occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush. Bathing once a week with a mild shampoo is enough to maintain the natural luster of its coat. The breed has a tendency to grow nails very fast and therefore, they need to be trimmed regularly.

Being a high energy dog, this dog breed needs proper exercise every day. A long walk and jog are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. This breed should not be confined indoors for too long. Given their natural retrieving talent, they have a natural outgoing personality which needs to be catered to accordingly. This breed also has a tendency to chew most of the stuff in their periphery. Thus, things which they can choke on or which can be harmful for them should be kept away from them.

Vizsla Health Problems:

Although the Vizsla is known to be sturdy and robust, it is known to be susceptible to certain health issues like hip dysplasia, canine epilepsy, hypothyroidism, dwarfism etc.
