Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Information

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Description:

The origin of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon lies in Germany. The breed dates back to the latter part of the 19th century. The breed is a result of dedicated breeding by a man named Eduard Kortahls, a Dutch who lived in Germany. The man owned six Griffons which he crossbred with several other breeds to develop the Wirehaired Griffon Terrier. It was primarily used for hunting small game such as fox, rabbit, badgers etc. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1887.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a medium sized dog with sturdy, strong frame. It has a square shaped head which is in proportion to the body; rounded eyes which are large in size and color is different shades of yellow or brown; low set ears which are medium in size and lie close to the head; a strong, deep and square muzzle; black nose with flared nostrils; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a docked tail which is set in line with the level of the back. The tail is carried horizontally in line with the level of the back and just slightly above it. It has medium sized, strong legs with round, well padded feet. This breed has a double coat with a dense, straight, wiry and medium in length outer coat, and a soft and dense water resistant undercoat. The color of the coat can be steel gray with brown markings, or white with brown or orange.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is an intelligent, energetic and loyal breed. It is good with kids as well as other dogs. It is friendly with strangers too if socialized well at an early age. Despite that, the dog’s keen sense of smell and agility make it a good watchdog. It’s keen sense of scent also make it ideal for tasks which require trail hunting such as bomb squad units etc. It is an easy to train breed and is a people pleaser. Hence, it is well suited for beginners. However, it does not adapt very well to an indoor environment. It is not suited to an apartment life and is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Care & Grooming:

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon sheds little hair. Its harsh and wiry double coat needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week, and should be stripped in every 4 to 5 months. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its beard should be washed daily to remove any food remains. Its low hanging ears tend to accumulate dirt and moisture so special care should be taken of the ears. Its nail and the hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed regularly.

This energetic dog needs lots of daily exercise. Long walks several times a day are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Walks should be supplemented with jogging, running, swimming etc. Lack of exercise may create behavioral problem in the dog. It is not suitable for the families who can’t devote much time for their dog. This dog matures slowly.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Health Problems:

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is generally a very hardy breed with some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Ear infection etc.
