English Springer Spaniel Information

English Springer Spaniel Description:

The origin of the English Springer Spaniel lies in England. This breed is the ancestor of all kinds of Spaniel breeds such as the Cocker Spaniel, the Irish Water Spaniel, the Welsh Springer and others. Until 1902, English Springer Spaniel and the Coker Spaniel was considered the same breed, differentiated by its size only. The smaller sized Coker Spaniel was used for hunting Woodcocks while the larger sized English Springer Spaniel was used for flushing and springing on the game. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1910.

The English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized dog with a compact frame. It has a slightly large head which is not at all heavy looking; medium sized eyes which oval in shape and dark hazel or dark brown in color; long hanging ears which are feathered and carried close to the cheeks; a large nose with flared nostrils and black or liver in color; a square muzzle which slightly tapers towards the nose; full, taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a docked tail which is set high. The tail is carried at the level of the back and slightly above, although it is never carried completely erect. It has short legs which are muscular with straight forelegs and slightly angulated hindlegs. It has medium sized feet which are oval in shape. The English Springer Spaniel has a double coat with a medium length outercoat which is flat or wavy, and glossy in appearance, and a short, soft and dense undercoat. The color of the coat can be black or liver with white; blue or liver roan; or tricolor of black and, white or liver with tan markings.

The English Springer Spaniel is a gentle, docile breed. It is excellent with kids, loves to play around with them and does not mind rough play. However, it can be slightly dominant towards other dogs if rules are not established at an early age. It is good with other pets, although it should not be trusted with birds because of the breed’s strong bird hunting instincts. It is an easy to train breed, although harsh training methods are not recommended. It is sensitive to harsh treatment. It can be slightly reserved with strangers, which makes it a good watchdog. This dog loves to swim and its scenting ability makes it a good police dog. If given the right amount of exercise, it adapts well to an apartment life, but is more comfortable at least in an average sized yard.

English Springer Spaniel Care & Grooming:

The English Springer Spaniel is an average shedder. The glossy coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. The ears and eyes should be cleaned regularly to avoid any infection. Its nail and the hair around the paws need to be trimmed regularly. Its long hanging ears tend to accumulate dirt so special care needs to be taken of the ears.

It is a high energy breed which needs plenty of daily exercise. Daily walks are essential for emotional as well as physical well being of the dog. These should be supplemented with jogging, running, swimming and other games to allow the dog to release its pent up energy. It tends to gain weight easily so should not be overfed.

English Springer Spaniel Health Problems:

The English Springer Spaniel is prone to some health issues like PRA, Ear infections, Epilepsy, hip and elbow Dysplasia etc.
