Brittany Information

Brittany Description:

The origin of the Brittany lies in the province of Brittany, France. However, the exact origin of the dog is unknown. It is believed to be a result of crossbreeding between the White Setter and Orange Setter. Other theories suggest that it might have descended from the Welsh Springer Spaniel. In the olden days, the breed was primarily used as a gundog for hunting small game and birds. Also called Brittany Spaniel in some parts of the world, it was first recognized by the AKC in 1934.

The Brittany is a medium sized dog with long legs and an athletic frame. It has a wedge shaped head; medium sized eyes which are soft in expression and dark colored; high set ears which lie close to the head and are triangular in shape; a large nose with flared nostrils which is fawn, tan or shades of pink in color; a slightly long yet square muzzle which tapers gradually towards the nose; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed either has a naturally short tail or is docked to have one. The tail is set high and is carried at the level of the back. It has long, straight legs with medium sized, padded feet. Its single coat is dense, medium in length and can be flat or wavy. The color of the coat can be a combination of orange and white, or liver and white.

The Brittany is an intelligent, easy-going breed. It is good with kids as well as other dogs. However, caution is advised with small, non canine pets such as birds, rabbits, rats etc because of the breed’s hunting instincts. It is very easy to train and can easily be obedience trained as well as trained for hunting. It can be slightly reserved with strangers, although it is not known to be a good watchdog or a guard dog. Given its docile and playful nature, it makes for a good companion dog too apart from being a hunting breed. It does not do very well indoors and is comfortable at least in an average sized yard, so not recommended for an apartment life.

Brittany Care & Grooming:

The Brittany sheds little hair. Its coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes, ears and teeth should be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. The hair around its eyes, ears and paws, and nails should be trimmed regularly. Its floppy ears tend to trap moisture in the ear canal and get infection often, so special care should be taken to clean its ears regularly.

It is a high energy breed which needs lot of daily exercise. Daily long walks should be supplemented with jogging or running regularly to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally.

Brittany Health Problems:

The Brittany is a healthy breed with some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Epilepsy, Ear infection etc.
