Flat Coated Retriever Information

Flat Coated Retriever Description:

The origin of the Flat Coated Retriever lies in England. This breed dates back to the 19th century. The breed is thought to be a result of crossbreeding between the extinct St. John’s Water Dog, Newfoundland, Setter breeds and Collie-type dogs. The breed was earlier known as a generic Labrador type, before being categorized as a different breed. As with many other breeds, the breed was on the verge of extinction after the Second World War. It began to be replaced by the Golden Retriever, which has its ancestry in the Flat Coated Retriever. However, dedicated breeding programs during 1960s resurrected the breed to a sizeable number. This breed was primarily used as a gundog for hunting small game. It was first recognized by the AKC in 1915.

The Flat Coated Retriever is a medium to large sized dog with a long, athletic frame. It has a long head proportionate to the body; almond shaped eyes which are medium in size and dark brown in color; medium set ears which are small in size and lie close to the head; a black or brown nose with flared nostrils; a strong, square muzzle; tight lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite or level bite. This breed has a medium length tail which is heavily feathered. The tail is set at the level of the back and is carried below or at the level of the back. It has medium length legs with small, well padded feet. It has a medium length coat which is dense, straight, lustrous and lying flat. The color of the coat can be pure black or liver.

The Flat Coated Retriever is a high-spirited, fun-loving breed. It is great with kids as well as dogs and other pets. It is friendly with strangers, which does not make it a very good watch dog or a guard dog. Caution is advised with non canine pets such as rabbit, bird etc. because of the dog’s strong hunting instincts. It is easy to train. However, variety in training is important as it can get bored with repetition. The breed does not adapt very well to an indoor environment, so not suited for an apartment life and more comfortable in at least in an average sized yard. Given the light, playful nature of the breed, it makes for a great companion breed.

Flat Coated Retriever Care & Grooming:

The Flat Coated Retriever is an average shedder and sheds heavily during spring and fall. Its flat and glossy coat is easy to maintain. Brushing 3-4 times a week and almost daily brushing during shedding season is sufficient to maintain a healthy looking coat. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears need to be cleaned properly to avoid any infection. Its nail and the hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed regularly.

It is an active breed which requires lots of daily exercise. Daily long walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. These should be supplemented with jogging, running or swimming every now and then. It enjoys the game of retrieving which should be incorporated in the exercise schedule. It tends to gain weight quickly so should not be overfed.

Flat Coated Retriever Health Problems:

The Flat Coated Retriever is prone to some health issues like Cancer, hip Dysplasia, PRA, Glaucoma, Epilepsy etc.
