Standard Schnauzer Information

Standard Schnauzer Description:

The origin of the Standard Schnauzer lies in Germany. It is the oldest variety out of the three kinds of Schnauzers. In the olden days, it was categorized the same as the German Pinscher. However, later on, the coarse hair variety of the German Pinscher was standardized and thus named the Standard Schnauzer. The breed derives its name from the word Schnauze which in German for muzzle. It was primarily used for hunting vermin and guarding livestock. It was also used as a messenger in World War I. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1904.

The Standard Schnauzer is a medium sized dog with a sturdy frame and a square appearance. It has a long head which is rectangular in shape; oval shaped eyes which are medium I size and dark brown in color; V-shaped ears which are medium in size and carried erect; a black nose; a strong, square muzzle; taut lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a docked tail which is set high. The tail is carried erect and is small in size. It has medium length legs which are square in shape and large, well padded feet. It has a double coat with a thick, tight, wiry and medium length outer coat which is coarse in texture, and a short, dense and soft undercoat. The color of the coat can be solid black or a combination of pepper and salt.

The Standard Schnauzer is a lively, energetic breed. If socialized at an early age, It may goes well with children and does not mind rough play. It is good with other dogs as well. However, because of the dog’s hunting instincts, caution is advised with smaller pets such as rats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. It is an easy to train breed but a firm approach is required. It is slightly reserved with strangers and has great agility, which makes it a good watchdog as well as a guard dog. It adapts well to indoor as well as outdoor environment. It is well suited to an apartment life.

Standard Schnauzer Care & Grooming:

The Standard Schnauzer is an odorless dog which sheds very little hair. Its hard and wiry double coat needs regular grooming. The coat needs to be brushed at least 3-4 times a week, and should be stripped in every 4 to 5 months. It should be bathed only when necessary and must be dried properly after each bath. Its beard should be washed daily to remove any food remains. Its nail, and the hair around eyes, ears and paws should be trimmed regularly.

It is an active breed which needs lots of exercise. Daily long walks are essential to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. Walks should be supplemented with jogging, running or a good romp in an open but secured area. Exercising should not be overdone in young puppies until they are strong enough.

Standard Schnauzer Health Problems:

The Standard Schnauzer is generally a long living healthy breed with some health issues like hip Dysplasia, Eye problems, Tumor etc.
