Komondor Information

Komondor Description:

The exact origin the Komondor is relatively unknown. Certain evidence suggests that this breed descended from the Aftscharka in Hungary. Other evidence suggests that this breed was created from Tibetan dogs. Historical evidence of this breed dates back to the 16th century. In the olden days, it was used for protecting cattle rather than herding it. The popularity of this breed grew in the early part of the 20th century and it continues till this day. The breed was first recognized by AKC in 1937.

The Komondor is a large dog breed with muscular frame. It has a large head; almond shaped eyes which are medium in size and dark brown in color; medium set ears which are slightly triangular in shape with a rounded tip; a wide, almost square shaped muzzle which is coarse in texture; a black nose with flared nostrils; thin dark colored lips with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a long tail which is slightly curved towards the end and is always carried below the level of the back. This breed has straight, short but strong legs with large feet. Its coat is very dense, protective, long and corded. The color of its coat is white with slight shades of cream or buff. A long heavy white corded coat is the most distinguished feature of this breed.

The Komondor is an intelligent and a loyal breed which is fiercely competitive. It is a highly independent breed and can work as a guard dog even in the absence of its master or proper orders. Thus, it makes for an excellent guard dog. It may not be a suitable breed for many families since it displays a strong independent trait. It is very difficult to train and does not possess a high degree of socialization. A firm authority is needed to train this breed. It is ideally suited for country living with large open spaces. However, if sufficiently exercised can adjust to apartment life as well. Due to its protective coat it is comfortable both in hot and cold temperatures.

Komondor Care & Grooming:

The Komondor sheds very little hair. However, its coat requires careful grooming. The coat should never be brushed or combed. It should always be trimmed by an expert since the coat is made of long and heavy cords. Its white coat tends to acquire a lot of dust so regular bathing is required to keep it clean. Its coat should be dried properly after each bath. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned properly and nails should be trimmed regularly to avoid any injury.

It is primarily a watchdog with fiercely protective tendencies. It does not need a lot of exercise, a daily long walk is sufficient to keep the dog healthy both physically and mentally. This breed has a tendency to sleep a lot when not out in the field and can gain weight quickly so overfeeding should be avoided.

Komondor Health Problems:

The Komondor prone to some health issues like hip dysplasia, bloat, eye and ear infections, skin allergies etc.
