Samoyed Information

Samoyed Description:

The origin of the Samoyed lies in Siberia. In fact, the breed derives its name from the Samoyedic tribe native to Siberia. It is believed to be one of the most ancient breed of dogs along with other breeds such as Chow Chow and Alaskan Malamutes, dating back to more than 3,000 years ago. In the olden days, it was used for drawing sleds and for providing warmth to the owner. The Samoyed was brought to America by fur traders in the early part of the 20th century. It was first recognized by the AKC in 1906.

The Samoyed is a medium sized dog with a heavy and furry appearance. It has a wedge shaped head proportionate to the body; small ears which are triangular in shape, slightly rounded at the tip and are carried erect; almond shaped eyes which are deep set and dark colored; black or brown nose; a deep muzzle which slightly tapers towards the end; tight lips which are black in color with teeth which meet in scissors bite. This breed has a medium length tail which is set at the level of the back. The tail is heavily feathered and is carried over the back or sideways. It has short, stout legs with large, well padded feet. It has a water resistant double coat with a short, dense and wooly undercoat which is soft in texture and a long, straight and rough outercoat. The color of the coat can be pure white, cream, biscuit or white and biscuit.

The Samoyed is a gentle, loving breed. It is excellent with kids and it is a team player, which makes it good with other dogs as well. However, caution is advised with small pets such as guinea pigs, rabbits etc. because of the dog’s hunting instincts. It is friendly with strangers as well which does not make it a very good watchdog or a guard dog. However, this breed is easy to train, although the training must start at an early age. Given the gentle and loving nature of the breed, it makes for an excellent companion breed. It is also a natural working dog and thus, is more than happy to pull sleds, herd cattle and other tasks. It adapts well to an indoor environment if sufficiently exercised. Thus, it is well suited to an apartment life.

Samoyed Care & Grooming:

The Samoyed is a seasonal heavy shedder. However, regular grooming of the coat is required throughout the year. Its coat should be brushed at least 3-4 times a week to maintain a healthy looking coat. Bathing should be avoided until absolutely necessary as it tends to strip the body of its natural oils and needs to be dried properly after each bath. Because of the heavy fur of the dog, it should be protected from very hot climates. Its eyes and ears should be cleaned regularly and nail needs to be trimmed properly to avoid any injury.

The Samoyed needs moderate amount of exercise. A long walk daily is required to satisfy the innate tendencies of the dog to work. Walks should be supplemented with the occasional jogging or running. However, exercise should not be overdone in hot conditions.

Samoyed Health Problems:

The Samoyed is prone to some health issues like hip dysplasia, Skin allergies, Diabetes, PRA etc.
